Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder addressed speculation surrounding the band’s drummer lineup in a statement shared on Instagram. The post thanked drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. for sitting in with Pearl Jam during their set at Ohana Festival. Rumors had suggested Laboriel Jr. might be joining the band permanently as its new drummer; however, Vedder’s statement indirectly denied those claims.
Vedder’s statement first expressed gratitude to fans before turning to Laboriel Jr.’s contribution during the festival performance.
“Hello good humans,” Vedder said. “Just a quick note on this Monday morning to thank each and everyone who came out to Ohana Fest this year. Three days of great groups, all of whom were further energized by the pumped up vibes from a perfect crowd. You all made our tenth year so special and we are GRATEFUL.”
Vedder went on to single out Laboriel Jr.’s performance with the band.
“Also wanted to extend our further appreciation to Abe Laboriel Jr. sitting in on drums for PJ,” he continued. “It was a joy to play with him, and he’s obviously extraordinary at his craft. The man works and PLAYS hard.”
He closed by acknowledging Laboriel Jr.’s long-standing role as Paul McCartney’s drummer.
“It is no wonder he’s been with the ultimate Maestro Paul McCartney and his mind blowing band for decades,” Vedder added. “Thank you so much for this weekend Abe. And thank YOU Paul. We owe you big time.”
The statement effectively put to rest rumors of a permanent lineup change. It clarified that Laboriel Jr.’s appearance was a guest performance rather than a new hire.
Matt Cameron departed Pearl Jam in July 2025 after 27 years behind the kit. The Ohana Festival performance marked the band’s first live show since Cameron’s exit, raising questions about who would fill the role and whether the arrangement would become permanent.
Laboriel Jr. has served as Paul McCartney’s drummer since 2001, touring and recording with the former Beatle for 25 years. Ohana Festival 2025 took place September 26-28 at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, California, where Vedder’s billed “Eddie Vedder and Friends” set became the setting for the surprise Pearl Jam appearance.
