Eddie Van Halen’s Reaction To The Passing Of Malcolm Young
Death has always been a complicated and inevitable experience, especially for those left behind after losing a beloved person. Grieving is painful for almost everyone, and some artists can leave their million of fans heartbroken due to their untimely death. In rock music, losing a musician was quite common due to its lifestyle’s over-the-top and wild nature.
The list of musicians who passed away too soon due to substance abuse, tragic events, or accidents is long. However, their fans, family members, bandmates, and fellow musicians never get used to saying one last goodbye to another celebrated rocker. When these two musicians were close friends, the reaction may be more devastating as it was with Eddie Van Halen, who expressed himself after AC/DC’s Malcolm Young‘s passing.
The Friendship Between Eddie Van Halen And Malcolm Young
Van Halen released their sixth studio album entitled ‘1984’ on January 9, 1984, and it’s known as the band’s frontman David Lee Roth’s last album after he left due to the personal problems and creative differences in 1985, until ‘A Different Kind of Truth.’ The album received positive reviews from music critics and longtime dedicated fans worldwide, and the band decided to announce a tour to promote their new record.
The band started their 1984 Tour on January 18, 1984, in Jacksonville, and it ended on September 2, 1984, in Nuremberg. As a part of their tour, Van Halen also performed at the annual hard rock and heavy metal music festival, Monsters of Rock. The lineup consisted of legendary groups and musicians such as AC/DC, Black Sabbath’s Ozzy Osbourne, Mötley Crüe, and many more. Thus, AC/DC and Van Halen could know each other better and spend more time together.
In time, Eddie Van Halen and Malcolm Young became very close friends, and according to Angus Young, they had a great bond. While talking about the longtime friendship between the two icons, Young recalled Eddie’s visit to the band’s California concert in 2000. He stated that Van Halen hugged everyone and was very happy to see AC/DC members, especially Malcolm Young.
Here’s what Angus Young said:
“He was the same as when I’d last seen him. Big smile, big hug, very happy to see me, super happy to see Mal, he loved Mal, had a very tight bond with Mal.“
The two rock geniuses shared more than praised music careers since they had a close friendship. Therefore, it’s not shocking that Eddie Van Halen was heartbroken after losing Malcolm Young, about which he shared his feelings.
