Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy recently shared details about an unexpected health incident during a live performance. He posted about the experience on Instagram.
The drummer revealed he became severely ill halfway through their show in Monterrey. He managed to return and complete the performance.
“Thanks to everyone in Monterrey for the great final leg kick-off last night…was a great show!” Portnoy said. “Not so fun fact: about halfway through last nights show, I was overwhelmed with a horrible nausea and ended up throwing my guts up before the encore!”
He emphasized how rare such an occurrence was in his extensive performing career.
“My first time in over thousands of shows actually getting sick on stage during a show!!” he continued. “Luckily feeling better today! Should be fine to rock Mexico City tomorrow!”
Portnoy also shared appreciation for a thoughtful gesture at his Mexico City hotel. He noted a message written on his hotel room window by a hotel employee.
The incident occurred during Dream Theater’s current tour. The tour has been highly anticipated by fans across Latin America. The Monterrey show on April 8 at Arena Monterrey marked an important stop on their 2026 tour schedule. Portnoy described it as the “final leg kick-off.”
Metal Injection reported that Dream Theater’s 2026 tour includes the Mexico City performance on April 10 at Arena CDMX. This would be tonight’s show following Portnoy’s recovery from the Monterrey incident. The band has been maintaining an active touring schedule while also working on new material.
The timing of Portnoy’s illness is particularly notable given Dream Theater’s busy creative period. The band has been balancing their touring commitments with studio work. They continue to develop new music for their devoted fanbase.
Despite the health scare, Portnoy’s determination to complete the Monterrey performance demonstrates the professionalism that has defined his decades-long career with Dream Theater. His quick recovery and positive outlook suggest that tonight’s Mexico City show will proceed as planned. This brings relief to fans who have been eagerly awaiting the performance.
