Dolly Parton On Stressing Over Her Time Capsule Song

The Kelly Clarkson Show’s YouTube channel recently re-uploaded sections from past interviews, one of which featured a chat with Dolly Parton from a few months ago. In the video, Parton talked about a song she created for a time capsule and shared her worries about the concept.

After confirming the song’s existence, she said:

“That has drove me crazy because I have written a song that nobody’s gonna hear till I’m 99 years old. I might be there, I might not be, but when we did Dollywood [Amusement Park], we put it in a time capsule to be open. So, I put all the things that had to do with the times. I put a cassette player, and I put a CD player. I put stuff all in this box that if it would preserve it to what, how we played those at the time.”

Mentioning her feelings about the song, the singer went on:

“I had to write this song that nobody was going to hear till then, and you have no idea how that has bothered me. I want to go dig that up so bad and think, ‘Well, I need to use that song because it’s a really good song.’ But yes, I have a song that’s buried that nobody’s gonna hear till – I don’t know whose damn idea that was.”

The time capsule is currently buried at Dollywood and will be opened in 2045 when Parton is 99 years old. So, she commented on the waiting time by saying:

“They weren’t expecting me to be there at all, and I probably won’t be. [Laughs] I mean, I’m just saying. I might be there; who knows? But the point is, there is a song, I figure, that’ll probably disintegrate that probably nobody will ever hear. That’s what bothers me. To think that it’s gonna be a song nobody ever gonna hear if it rots in there before they open it.”

The artist expressed similar thoughts when she referred to the secret song in her 2020 book, ‘Songteller: My Life In Lyrics.’ She shared her feelings about burying it for the years to come as follows:

“[It felt] like burying one of my kids, putting it on ice or something, and I won’t be around to see it brought back to life. It’s just burning me up inside that I have to leave it in there.”

While the capsule remains closed, Dolly Parton keeps working on new projects. Her new album, ‘Rockstar,’ will come out in November 2023. The first single from the album, called ‘World on Fire’ came out in May. You can listen to it in the video below.
