Did Mick Jagger’s Relationship With David Bowie Cause Keith Richards To Hate Him

It is no doubt that The Rolling Stones is one of the bands that defined hard rock. Founded in 1962, the band has since sold 200 million records worldwide and has fans from all over the world. The award-winning band is also named among the greatest artists of all time by various sources.

Rolling Stones was formed by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, who are childhood friends and classmates. At that time, they noticed their musical interests are the same and started to jam together. Following their first show as the Rolling Stones on 12 July 1962, they rose to fame in a short time. Active for almost 60 years, the band still makes music and goes on tours despite their old age.

The iconic musician David Bowie was also active during the same period as the Rolling Stones. With his dazzling stage shows and unique stage personas, Bowie had a great impact on pop culture until his death in 2016. Although he was a little behind Rolling Stones at the start of his career, Bowie quickly caught up.

However, David Bowie and Rolling Stones did not just share their success in the music industry. There were also rumors about Mick Jagger and Bowie having an intimate affair which circulated for a long time. According to the rumors, Bowie’s wife caught the pair in bed and thought they were having sex. The close relationship between Bowie and Jagger made someone a little bit jealous as well, and it was no other than Keith Richards.

David Bowie’s Intimate Relationship With Mick Jagger

According to Christopher Andersen’s 2012 biography ‘Mick: The Wild Life and Mad Genius of Jagger,’ Bowie and Jager were going everywhere together without their wives, hanging out, or just cuddling up together in a hotel room. Apart from that, the rumors about the pair having an affair also showed the extent of closeness between them.

Cristopher Andersen stated in his book about Bowie and Jagger’s relationship that:

“Bowie and Jagger were soon spotted everywhere together without their wives: sitting ringside at the Muhammad Ali-Ken Norton bout, hanging out at the London disco Tramp, yelling and stomping their approval at a Diana Ross concert, or just cuddling up together on a hotel room couch.”

In the same book, Andersen stated that Angie Bowie returned to her house one day to find Jagger and Bowie in bed. That day, according to Angie Bowie, they looked like they have had sex and were very hungover following a night fueled with alcohol and possibly drugs. However, Angie did not think that Bowie had a big love affair with Mick, and it was just an occasional thing.

Angie Bowie told NME in an interview about how she walked in on Bowie and Jagger:

“I walked into the bedroom, and David was there with all these pillows and duvets on top of him, and on the other side of the bed was Mick’s leg sticking out. I asked, ‘Did you guys have a good night?’ They were so hungover they could hardly speak. I took pity on them.

I don’t think it was a big love affair with Mick. It was probably more drunken pawing.”

While Mick Jagger was spending most of his time with David Bowie, Keith Richards was probably sitting there all by himself waiting for his return. As you know, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger are very close friends, and being ditched by Jagger might have made Keith quite upset.

Did Keith Richards Hate David Bowie Because Of His Close Relationship With Mick Jagger?

In a 2008 interview with Uncut magazine, Keith Richards revealed his disdain for David Bowie. He claimed that he only remembers Bowie’s ‘Changes’ from his ‘Hunky Dory’ album and added that he is not a big fan of the star. Richards then went on to say that what Bowie does is all posing, and it has nothing to do with music.

Keith Richards told Uncut that:

“It’s all pose. It’s all fucking posing. It’s nothing to do with music. He knows it too. I can’t think of anything else he’s done that would make my hair stand up.”

Although Keith Richards appeared to hate David Bowie back then, it seems he overcame his jealousy when the iconic musician died. After Bowie’s tragic passing in 2016, Keith Richards made a statement saying the shocking death of Bowie saddens him. He then said David was an original artist in everything he did, and he will miss him. In the statement, he also described Bowie as a good friend.

Keith Richard’s statement was:

“I’m deeply saddened by such a sudden shock. David was a true original in everything he did and, along with many others, I’m going to miss him. Another goodbye to another good friend.”

Keith Richards’s hate and jealousy for Bowie appear to have resulted from Bowie’s close relationship with Jagger. However, the rockstar’s death seems to have brought an end to Keith’s negative thoughts on the musician.
