Former Megadeth bassist David Ellefson has praised Kerry King’s successful transition from Slayer to his new musical project. He shared his thoughts in a post on Instagram.

Ellefson’s comments came after attending a Kerry King Music performance in Frankfurt. He expressed admiration for the former Slayer guitarist’s debut album and new direction.

“Stopped in to see Kerry King Music and the guys tear the roof off the Zoom in Frankfurt earlier this week,” Ellefson said. “As I told Kerry, he’s done one of the best jobs I’ve seen of launching a killer debut album after decades in such an iconic band.”

The bassist continued his praise. He highlighted the balance King achieved in his new musical venture.

“It’s a fresh sound without being a total departure — bold, brutal, and unmistakably him,” he continued. “Love the album. Love the band. A great show, indeed!”

Ellefson’s endorsement reflects the broader reception of King’s ambitious solo debut. This follows his legendary tenure with Slayer.

Distorted Sound Magazine reported that King’s debut solo album From Hell I Rise was released on May 17, 2024, through Reigning Phoenix Music. The album represents King’s first major musical statement since Slayer’s farewell tour concluded in 2019.

The project showcases King’s commitment to maintaining his signature sound while exploring new creative territories. Grande Rock noted that King wrote all the material himself and assembled an impressive lineup of musicians for the recording process.

The album features notable collaborators including drummer Paul Bostaph from Slayer, bassist Kyle Sanders from Hellyeah, guitarist Phil Demmel, and vocalist Mark Osegueda from Death Angel. Mayhem Rockstar Magazine revealed that the production was handled by Josh Wilbur, known for his work with Korn and Lamb of God.

Beyond his studio work, King has been actively touring to support the new material. Arrow Lords of Metal confirmed that Kerry King served as a special guest on the Lamb of God/Mastodon “Ashes Of Leviathan” co-headline tour in North America. The tour ran from July 19 through August 31, 2024.
