Former Megadeth bassist David Ellefson has spoken out in support of former W.A.S.P. guitarist Chris Holmes, who recently announced he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Ellefson shared his message in a post reacting to Holmes’ announcement.
The statement focused on Ellefson’s personal admiration for Holmes and his appeal to fans to contribute to the guitarist’s GoFundMe campaign set up to help cover his medical expenses.
“This one is especially close to my heart,” Ellefson said. “I’ve always gotten on well with the legendary Chris Holmes— a true original and a major contributor to rock ‘n’ roll, but beyond the music, a genuinely kind, funny gentleman whose friendship leaves an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.”
Ellefson went on to encourage his followers to consider donating. He revealed that he had already made his own contribution.
“I’ve donated, and if you’re able to help, I hope you’ll consider doing the same,” he continued.
He closed his message with words of encouragement directed at Holmes himself.
“Sending love, strength and prayers to you, Chris,” Ellefson said. “Thank you for everything you’ve given all of us in the name of rock ‘n’ roll.”
Holmes’ diagnosis and the outpouring of support around it come amid a difficult chapter for the 68-year-old guitarist. He has lived in Cannes, France with his wife Catherine since 2014.
The GoFundMe, organized by Catherine, is seeking €50,000 and has raised roughly €20,000 to €25,000 so far. The campaign points to an administrative error that left Holmes with limited “emergency only” medical coverage. That gap has contributed to about €20,000 in medical debt tied to his treatment, exams, medication and transport costs.
This is not the first time Holmes has leaned on fans for support during a health crisis. He battled throat and neck cancer in 2022. A crowdfunding campaign helped cover his treatment costs, and he was later declared clear.
Holmes has spoken candidly about his current diagnosis and the decision to seek help again. “The good thing is it’s 100% curable. It’s just going through what I gotta go through,” he said, adding, “I need to do a GoFundMe. It’s the only way I’m gonna make it through.”
Ellefson is not alone among Holmes’ peers in rallying support. W.A.S.P. frontman Blackie Lawless has also publicly urged the band’s fanbase to stand behind Holmes, writing that “the entire W.A.S.P. family are devastated with the news that our Brother and originator, Chris Holmes is now in a serious fight.”
