Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine recently shared ambitious plans for the band’s future. He discussed the possibility of performing their final show in outer space in an interview with Louder Sound.

Mustaine expressed his vision for an extraordinary venue. He drew inspiration from recent developments in space travel and celebrity participation in such ventures.

“I hope we’ll be playing up in space. I think that will be a really fitting climax. And I’m not talking about on the side of a vomit comet. A gig on the Moon, a full moon landing, that would be cool,” Mustaine said.

The Megadeth frontman has been observing the growing trend of celebrities venturing into space. This sparked his own interest in the concept. “I saw they sent up a bunch of celebrities into space and I thought ‘Well, if them, why not me?’, you know? I’m just watching how that all progresses. I know Elon Musk and Richard Branson were working on interstellar travel. I think people are going to be travelling to space a lot sooner than you think,” he continued.

Space travel is already becoming more accessible, according to Mustaine’s observations. Commercial flights are reaching extreme altitudes. “People already travel over 40,000 feet altitude, and when you get to that kind of atmosphere you’re basically already in space. So I do think it’s going to happen. The question is, are people going to be able to inhabit the moon?” he added.

While Mustaine’s vision of a lunar concert remains aspirational, the legendary band is preparing for a more conventional farewell. Vice reports that Megadeth’s farewell tour could easily run for three to five years. This provides ample time for the band to bid farewell to fans across the globe before any potential space venture.

The band’s final chapter is taking shape with concrete plans already in motion. Consequence revealed that Megadeth will release their last studio album in January 2026. This final album will serve as the musical punctuation mark on decades of heavy metal innovation and influence.

Following the album release, 98 Online noted that the farewell tour titled “This Was Our Life” will kick off in spring 2026. The tour is expected to span multiple years, encompassing Latin America, Europe, and North America. Notable appearances supporting Iron Maiden will give fans across continents the opportunity to witness Megadeth’s final performances.

While no official space concert plans have been confirmed for the immediate future, Mustaine’s dream of a lunar finale reflects the band’s larger-than-life legacy. The conventional farewell tour beginning in 2026 will allow Megadeth to celebrate their impact on heavy metal music. They may pursue more unconventional venues—whether on Earth or beyond—after this farewell journey concludes.
