Dave Mustaine recently addressed his decision to include Metallica’s “Ride the Lightning” on Megadeth’s final album, signaling peace with his former bandmates in a statement shared on Premier Guitar.
The Megadeth frontman explained his reasoning for including the track he co-wrote with his former Metallica bandmates. He framed it as a respectful tribute to his musical origins.
“As I come full circle on the career of a lifetime, the decision to include ‘Ride the Lightning,’ a song I co-wrote with James, Lars, and Cliff, was to pay my respects to where my career first started,” Mustaine said. “It showcases the spider riffing and the grunting fretting—you fret a G flat power chord and you slide up into the G—technique that I brought [to the band]. I thought it was just a great way to pay my respects to James and Lars and to close the circle.”
Mustaine also defended his version of the track. He emphasized his role as a co-writer.
“[I don’t think it’s a cover version], because I wrote the song too,” he continued. “I think other people will say that, but if you’re asking me, I don’t think it’s a cover song. When we played it for people who are fans of that band and that song, the consensus has been that we did a fitting homage. I think we did it at least as good. It’s a little faster.”
This gesture marks a notable moment of reconciliation as Megadeth prepares for their farewell. The band’s decision to include this track comes as they prepare for what promises to be an extensive final chapter in their legendary career.
Rogers Place reported that the self-titled 10-track album featuring the bonus “Ride the Lightning” cover releases January 23, 2026. The timing of this release coincides with the band’s massive farewell tour. This creates a comprehensive send-off for one of metal’s most influential acts.
The band’s 2026 North American farewell tour begins February 15 in Victoria, BC. Canadian dates conclude March 6 in Quebec City. Loudwire noted that this farewell tour could potentially extend beyond 2026. This gives fans multiple opportunities to witness the band’s final performances.
However, fans hoping for a reunion with former Megadeth members will be disappointed. MetalSucks confirmed that Mustaine has definitively ruled out any participation from ex-Megadeth members during the global farewell trek.
The farewell tour represents the culmination of decades of metal history. Megadeth’s influence on the thrash metal genre remains undeniable. As the band prepares to close this chapter, Mustaine’s olive branch to his former Metallica bandmates adds a poignant note of closure to one of metal’s most famous feuds.
