When it comes to reuniting with former bandmates or revisiting the songs you performed together, feelings can often be mixed. However, for Kings Of Trash, it seems like any potential drama with their former bandmate, Dave Mustaine, is a nonissue.
In a recent interview with Ultimate Guitar, Jeff Young was asked whether they received any feedback from Mustaine regarding their tour and revisiting their original material. He responded with a carefree attitude, stating that they couldn’t care less about Dave’s thoughts on the matter. On top of that, according to him, it is a win-win in any case since Mustaine also gains profit from this reunion.
“Nah, we couldn’t care less,” the musician responded when he was asked about Mustaine’s ideas. “And it’s a win-win for him. Because all the publishing, for example, on the ‘Best Of The West,’ he’s getting all that money. We’re making him money, and he doesn’t have to do anything.”
Young continued, “So, we’re performing the songs because they’re part of our history, and the fans want to hear them, and we will benefit from that, and so will he, so it’s a win-win. How much cooler can anything be than that? So, if he has something to say about it… I wouldn’t imagine it would be very objective… not that anything he’s ever said has been objective.”
Dave Mustaine, David Ellefson, and Jeff Young were bandmates in Megadeth, but they have had a tumultuous relationship over the years, with Mustaine firing Ellefson from the band. When the bassist founded Kings Of Trash, Young joined him. Ellefson’s only criterion when recruiting him to the band was that he sounded different from Dave.
“We needed a second guitar player that would be very different from how Dave [Mustaine] played,” Ellefson recently told Metal Sucks. He also added, “We didn’t even really care if it was ‘heavy metal sounding.’ It just needed to be something that was different from what Dave was doing to create diversity.”
It’s no secret that Dave Mustaine has a reputation for being a bit of a hothead. He’s been known to have a bit of a temper and isn’t afraid to speak his mind, even if it’s not the most diplomatic approach. So, it’s not hard to predict that he might hear from him as a response to the band’s nonchalant attitude toward his thoughts on their reunion.
