Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine made headlines after pausing the band’s live show in Helsinki, Finland, to call out a reporter over an inappropriate question. The moment was captured in a fan’s video shared on TikTok.

Mustaine addressed the crowd directly, revealing that a backstage interview had taken an unexpected and offensive turn. A reporter had asked him who would win in a fight between him and Metallica’s James Hetfield.

“So before we took the stage tonight, we were doing some press backstage. And I was doing an interview with some guy from a newspaper here – big newspaper, you can probably figure out who it was. And the guy was such a f*cking d*ckhead,” Mustaine said.

He then described the specific question that set him off.

“He asked me, if I fought James Hetfield, who would win? And I thought, ‘What kind of a f*cking idiot would say something like that?'” he continued.

Rather than letting the moment pass, Mustaine chose to address it publicly from the stage and dedicate a song in response.

“I want to dedicate this next song to [the reporter] but we don’t have a song called ‘I’m an A–hole.’ Instead, we’ll do another new song called ‘Let There Be Shred,'” he said.

The incident took place during Megadeth’s live performance in Helsinki, Finland. Mustaine used the stage as a platform to publicly call out the reporter before launching into the band’s set. The outburst was widely described as consistent with his long-established public persona, and it quickly drew attention across the metal community as one of the more memorable moments from Megadeth’s 2026 European tour.

The Helsinki show on June 28, 2026 was part of a broader European tour stretch that also included a stop at the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival, one of Finland’s premier heavy metal events. The back-to-back appearances made Helsinki a significant stop on the tour, and the city’s crowd delivered in kind — loud, energetic, and fully engaged throughout the night.

The tour also came at a notable moment for the band. Megadeth has been touring with Finnish guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari, who has been a member of the lineup for nearly three years. His presence added an extra layer of significance to the Helsinki show, effectively making it a hometown performance for the guitarist. He was met with an enthusiastic reception from the local crowd.

Mustaine’s decision to call out the reporter from the stage reflects a pattern that has defined much of his public career. His willingness to confront perceived disrespect head-on — whether directed at him or at his complicated history with former bandmates — has long been a defining characteristic of his public image.

The question itself touched on one of rock’s most well-documented rivalries. Mustaine was famously fired from Metallica in 1983 before going on to found Megadeth. The tension between the two camps has been a recurring subject in metal journalism for decades. That a reporter would frame the relationship in such a blunt and provocative way clearly struck Mustaine as both disrespectful and beneath serious music coverage — and he made sure the audience knew exactly how he felt about it.
