Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine recently discussed the band’s future touring plans and potential retirement. He shared his thoughts in an interview with Billboard. The metal legend addressed concerns about the longevity of Megadeth’s farewell tour and how his ongoing hand injury might impact the band’s future.
“Most tours that we do are two to three years. I can’t see it coming any shorter than two years, unless my hands give up on me,” Mustaine said.
The guitarist went on to explain his approach to potentially ending his career on a high note.
“The time’s coming, but right now I can still play, and I want to go out on top. If I feel like it’s starting to suffer, that’s when the end will be near and that’s when I’ll probably look into changing my life,” he continued. “I think this is a great way to say thank you to the fans for everything.”
Mustaine also expressed hope that longtime fans will remember the band’s legacy.
“I’m just hoping that any of the fans who have moved on will remember Megadeth and go get this final album,” he said.
The comments suggest that while Megadeth’s farewell tour is planned to last at least two years, the timeline could be shortened if Mustaine’s hand condition worsens.
These statements come as the band prepares for an extensive farewell tour that will span multiple continents throughout 2026.
Select Your Tickets reported that the farewell tour will launch February 15 in Victoria, BC, with special guests Anthrax and Exodus joining the North American leg. The initial 12-date trek will include stops in Calgary, Winnipeg, and Ottawa before wrapping up on March 6 in Quebec City, QC.
The tour schedule extends well beyond North America. Loudwire confirmed that European dates are planned for May 2026, including shows in Valencia, A Coruna, and Bilbao, Spain. The band will also return to Latin America in April, starting with a show in Lima, Peru.
Megadeth’s official website revealed that the farewell tour will also include a Latin America tour scheduled for August-September 2026. This demonstrates the extensive scope of what could be the band’s final touring cycle.
The timing of these farewell tour announcements coincides with the release of Megadeth’s self-titled final studio album, which is set to drop on January 23, 2026, just weeks before the tour begins. This strategic timing allows fans to experience the band’s final recorded material alongside their live farewell performances.
