Iron Maiden guitarist Dave Murray has shared his thoughts on his band role in a recent interview with Louder Sound.

“The leadership comes from Steve [Harris], Bruce [Dickinson], and Rod [Smallwood, the manager],’ Murray explained. ‘I’m more like a team player, and I’m happy to be in that position.”

“You couldn’t have a whole band with people as laid-back as me, or else nothing would get done,” he added.

Iron Maiden approaches their 50th anniversary. This milestone highlights the long-standing dynamic within one of heavy metal’s most influential bands.

Murray’s modest approach to his role stands in contrast to his significant contributions to Iron Maiden’s signature sound and success.

Steve Harris’s early recognition of Murray’s talent emerges from biographical sources. “When the others made it plain that it was either them or Dave Murray, there was no choice. There was no way I was gonna let Dave go. Not only was he a nice bloke, he was just the best guitarist I’d ever worked with. He still is,” Harris stated.

Dinosaur Rock Guitar highlights Murray’s distinctive playing style through his unique approach to solos. His technique often incorporates improvisation to create memorable melodies. “Sometimes I just improvise, and other times I will sort of work it out. I like a solo with a good beginning and a climax,” Murray has explained.

Maiden Fans documents Murray’s guitar work as fundamental to Iron Maiden’s sound. His mastery of the legato technique, inspired by Jimi Hendrix, has shaped the band’s distinctive musical identity.

His musical partnership with Adrian Smith has created a defining element of Iron Maiden’s sound. Their harmonized leads have become the band’s signature style. The chemistry between the guitarists extends beyond technical skill, contributing to Iron Maiden’s lasting success.
