Performing alongside Jimi Hendrix was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Dave Mason but covering a Bob Dylan hit together indeed made it even more special. When Goldmine recently asked Mason to name the ten albums that changed his life, the rock icon had to pay homage to Hendrix and recall how unique teaming up with him was.
Mason’s career is iconic as the musician collaborated with guitar heroes from Hendrix to Clapton and worked with cult acts from the Rolling Stones to Fleetwood Mac. However, when it was time to disclose which rock records influenced him the most, the Jimi Hendrix Experience took the cake.
“This album was truly something special,” Dave said as he named Hendrix’s ‘Electric Ladyland’ among the records that had changed his life. “I was honored to have played the acoustic guitar part on Jimi’s cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘All Along the Watchtower’ as well as singing on ‘Crosstown Traffic.’ Jimi was completely unique.”
So, it was pretty special for Mason to collaborate with Hendrix on one of the records that changed his life and experience singing and playing with the late guitarist. After paying tribute to Jimi, the singer listed other important records in his musical life, including the Rolling Stones’ ‘Beggar’s Banquet’ and Peter Gabriel’s classic album, ‘So.’
