Dave Grohl’s Secret Supergroup With Josh Homme And John Paul Jones

It is very common for musicians to form new bands besides their existing ones. It is common for various artists to get together somehow and decide to produce new material together. They are mainly inspired by their shared enthusiasm to work on similar music and complement each other’s abilities. Most of them are already friends, making it easier for them to collaborate.

Some of the collaborations may surprise and excite us as we would never expect those musicians to come together for a project. Among the most exciting collaborations, we can surely count the one between Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones.

Dave Grohl Formed A New Band Named ‘Them Crooked Vultures’ With Josh Homme And John Paul Jones

Dave Grohl first revealed in an interview with Mojo in 2005 that he had a project in his mind which would include both Josh Homme and John Paul Jones. Thus, the rumors started spreading long before they began ‘secretly’ working on it. It took them four years to bring their wish into action, and finally, in 2009, the three notable musicians formed a new band named Them Crooked Vultures.

Here is how Dave Grohl revealed the new project:

“The next project that I’m trying to initiate involves me on drums, Josh Homme on guitar, and John Paul Jones playing bass. That’s the next album. That wouldn’t suck.”

The supergroup also includes the guitarist Alain Johannes during their live performances. The band members instantly began working on new material and made a good start in the music scene. They went to the studio, started recording in February 2009, and performed their first show in Chicago in August 2009.

The supergroup released their self-titled debut studio album on November 13, 2009. The first single of the album called ‘New Fang’ had dropped on October 26, 2009, and later on, the second single named ‘Mind Eraser, No Chaser’ was released on November 3, 2009. The album generally received favorable reviews, and the three were praised for their technical virtuosity and great harmony.

The band also launched an extensive North American and UK tour named ‘Deserve the Future Tour’ between October and December 2009. Later on, they appeared at several festivals and television shows. They confirmed that they were working on the second album but couldn’t release it yet due to their busy schedule with their bands.

Them Crooked Vultures seems to be on hiatus right now, but the band members always keep the door open for a possible reunion. In a previous interview, Dave Grohl implied that they love playing together, and future projects are always on the table. Grohl updated the band’s current status and stated that he doesn’t have any official news, but they have been working on new music.

Dave Grohl speaking on the status of the supergroup:

“We practice once every decade, and we’re coming up on another decade, aren’t we? I don’t have any official news but there’s always something cooking.”

Without a doubt, the band is among the most interesting supergroups of the 21st century. Dave Grohl always referred to the group as his dream band, and it seems like they will definitely reunite at some point as all three are enthusiastic about that.
