Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl recently opened up about the devastating loss of the band’s drummer and his longtime friend Taylor Hawkins. He shared his emotional struggle in an interview with Mojo4Music.

Grohl spoke candidly about how Hawkins’ unexpected death has affected him personally and professionally.

The frontman continued to express his ongoing difficulty processing the loss.

“I still have a hard time making sense of it,” he added.

The profound impact of Hawkins’ death continues to resonate deeply within the band. They navigate the complex journey of moving forward without their beloved drummer and friend.

The Independent reported that Grohl recently reflected on Hawkins’ 25-year tenure as drummer in an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music. The interview was conducted on what would have been Hawkins’ 54th birthday. The 57-year-old frontman described his former bandmate as not just “an amazing drummer” but “this incredible spirit” who brought something irreplaceable to the band.

The daily reality of grief remains a constant presence for the surviving members. The Independent revealed that Grohl disclosed how the band members “talk about him every f****** day” and wake up texting about missing him. They strive to channel Hawkins’ energy in everything they do. This ongoing emotional process highlights the deep personal bonds that existed beyond their professional relationship.

Grohl has acknowledged that the band’s decision to continue was “really complicated.” This applies not just for the existing members but also for any new drummer who would have to fill Hawkins’ shoes. The Independent noted that the current lineup now includes Grohl, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, Rami Jaffee, and drummer Ilan Rubin, who reportedly joined in 2025.

“Beyond being an amazing drummer, he was this incredible spirit,” Grohl said. He emphasized how Hawkins was described as an “incredible human being,” “brother,” and “best friend” whose absence leaves the world “not the same.”

The band continues to honor Hawkins’ memory while moving forward with their music. They have plans to release their upcoming album “Your Favourite Toy” in April. This demonstrates their commitment to keeping his spirit alive through their continued work together.
