Dave Grohl Admits He Prefers To Play Drums Instead Of Singing While Recording With Nirvana Bandmates
Former Nirvana drummer and current Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl opened up about his current relationship with former bandmates, bassist Krist Novoselić, and guitarist Pat Smear during a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show, and apparently, the three occasionally gather to jam together in a studio during which Grohl only plays drums instead of taking the vocalist duties.
As many of you know, Nirvana was formed in 1987 by the lead singer Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselić and later joined by Dave Grohl as the band’s drummer in 1990. Despite only being active for seven years, the band was one of the best-selling bands of all time, starting from the unexpected mainstream success with their second studio album, ‘Nevermind’ as well as the first single from that album, the legendary track, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit.’
Unfortunately, the legendary frontman Kurt Cobain committed suicide and was found dead at his home in Seattle, Washington, at the young age of 27, on April 8, 1994. After finding out that their bandmates killed himself which wasn’t extremely unexpected as Cobain tried to kill himself before and has been struggling with substance addiction as well as depression for a long time, Nirvana disbanded and members parted ways without releasing anything related to the band to this date.
During a recent interview, Dave Grohl revealed that all three former members of Nirvana including Krist Novoselić and Pat Smear still hit the studio every once in a while whenever they’re in the same town. Furthermore, as former bandmates fool around and have fun in the studio, they record some songs, however, never intended to release them and haven’t done anything related to those recordings.
Her is what Grohl said:
“So, Krist Novoselić is a pilot, he flies his own plane… he lives up in the Pacific Northwest and whenever he comes down to Los Angeles, you know, we always love to see each other and we’ll have dinner. The last time he was here I made dinner for us and we hung out. and Pat’s always around and the three of us, you know we like to just, we like to be together. We like to see each other and if there are instruments around or a studio that’s available, we’ll just get together and kind of jam, you know?
And we don’t like running through a big old Nirvana setlist but we do like to fool around and sometimes as we’re fooling around, songs happen. And you know if we’re in a studio we’ll record them. So we’ve recorded some stuff that’s really cool. But we’ve never done anything with it. But to us, I think, to us, it’s, it’s more just like friends, jamming around, t doesn’t really seem like any sort of like a big official reunion or anything.”
After finding out that Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselić, and Pat Smear actually recorded new material over the years all of which will most likely be out of fans’ reach, Howard Stern wanted to know more about those recording sessions and asked if Foo Fighters’ frontman took the responsibility of vocals during recordings. Apparently, Dave Grohl only plays drums as the former bandmates only record instrumentals without a vocalist.
Asked if he handles the vocals, Grohl replied:
“Well, no, I’m just playing the drums. We don’t have a singer. So, it’s like we kind of record these instrumentals and, and just mess around. It’s very casual. There’s no pressure on us to do something that the world will have to hear it’s more really just for fun, and a lot of it’s really cool, you know?
It reminds you that, that when the three of us get together in a room and start playing, It sounds like it did. It sounds like it used to. When we put the three of us in a room and it makes that noise, it still does.”
