The Kinks’ guitarist Dave Davies has opened up about his renewed relationship with his brother and former bandmate Ray Davies.
Davies spoke candidly about the brothers’ long and turbulent history. He described how their bond has evolved over the years and hinted at the possibility of a future Kinks reunion.
“It’s miraculous, really, how we’ve become so bonded,” Davies said. “We were getting on great. We have fluctuated between getting on really well and not getting on at all over the years, but there’s always been telepathy, since childhood.”
When asked whether a Kinks reunion could still be on the table, Davies left the door open without making any firm commitments.
“I don’t know [if a Kinks reunion is still possible],” he said, “but never say never.”
The renewed closeness between the brothers has been quietly building through a shared creative project. Ray and Dave are currently collaborating on The Kinks: Brothers, an art exhibition in London inspired by some of their earliest shared memories. The project has drawn fresh attention to the band’s enduring legacy and marks one of the most visible signs yet that the brothers have moved past decades of friction.
The last time the two shared a stage was in December 2015 in London, when Ray joined Dave for a performance of “You Really Got Me.” The brothers also worked together on new Kinks material in 2019. That same year, they are said to have ended a long-running feud and settled back into living near each other in London.
The history between Ray and Dave has never been simple. Over the course of the band’s career and beyond, their relationship swung between close collaboration and bitter estrangement. Dave himself acknowledged there were times he could barely stand to be in the same room as his brother.
Despite the warmer tone of recent months, a full Kinks reunion remains uncertain. The band officially split in 1996. Speculation about a comeback has surfaced repeatedly over the years, but no concrete plans have materialized. For now, the art exhibition and Dave’s carefully worded optimism are the clearest signals fans have that the door between the brothers — and perhaps the band — remains open.
