Courtney Love Recalls Michael Stipe’s Support When R.E.M.’s Peter Buck Didn’t Invite Nirvana To His House
Courtney Love recently Instagram post featured a photograph of the 40 Watt club wall. Love stated that she wrote the writing and recalled when Pete Buck didn’t invite them to his house, but later Michael Stipe came to support.
Love was on tour with her band, Hole, and they had stopped in Georgia and spent most of their time on their van. However, they expected R.E.M’s lead guitarist, who was also there, to invite them over to his house, which was something cool people did. He didn’t; instead, the band’s lead singer Michael Stipe came to the club to support them.
The post also included a message Love had written on the wall shortly after Kurt Cobain had exclaimed during a TV show in England that Courtney was the best sex he ever had. After their show at the venue, Love decided to leave a message for Kurt, saying that he too is the best sex she’s had. Unfortunately, Cobain never visited the venue again and probably never saw his future wife’s love note.
Here is Love’s caption:
“Love & Sex graffiti at the 40 Watt (Athens, GA) club.
Peter Buck didn’t invite us to stay at his house (it was said that if Buck invited you to stay, you were hot shit), but Michael Stipe came (it was a really empty show. I recall a ‘Freebird’ cover – you know, when you’re on a van tour, little venues, bars, etc, back then, and I bet still, in parts of America you get two things happening for sure. One guy yells ‘show us your tits’ and someone also – usually the same guy, yells ‘play ‘Freebird‘ which is actually a greatly maligned song. So I remember learning it, (just to rescue its reputation,) but that was like…
Michael – God has entered the building. There was this time… before cell phones… And a world full of lost beautiful boys.”
Below her caption, she kept her fan account’s words, which were:
“40 Watt Club backstage. Athens, Georgia. c. 1991.
Mudhoney left this message on the wall for Nirvana around September 1991. At first glance, this just looks like some graffiti banter between bands, but if you look carefully… Courtney’s handwriting sticks out like a sore thumb.
November 8, 1991
Kurt plays with Nirvana on tv in England for the first time ever and declares that ‘Courtney Love, the lead singer of the sensational pop group Hole, is the best fuck in the world.‘
November 12, 1991. Four days later.
Courtney and Hole play the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia and Courtney leaves a note for Kurt in response to his declaration on tv. Kurt was still in Germany at this point. A week later, Hole and Nirvana would play together in Belgium. Nirvana never played the 40 Watt Club after October 5, 1991, so Kurt probably never saw this. But still cute to see. There was always talk about them leaving messages for each other on walls of venues.
