Corey Taylor’s wife Alicia made fun of Gen Z on X for trying to cancel Slipknot.
A fan shared lyrics of Slipknot’s ‘Disasterpiece’ where the band said ‘I wanna slit your throat and f*ck the wound.’ Alicia reposted it by writing ‘Cancel Slipknot’ in hashtags.
“Also, if you think im serious im mocking op. Here’s some merch i have from them. It’s not much,” the same user explained in the comments, sharing some Slipknot masks and signed album photos.
Slipknot isn’t the only band that received backlash from Gen Z. They tried to cancel Cannibal Corpse on social media in August, but fans supported Corpsegrinder. The debate began when someone brought up Mindless Self Indulgence and their song ‘Panty Shot,’ saying to separate the art from the artist but noting that this is the ‘art.’
The song includes lyrics that sexualize a minor. In 2021, MSI’s singer, Jimmy Urine, faced accusations of sexually assaulting a minor. Cannibal Corpse entered the conversation when someone shared the lyrics to their song ‘Necropedophile.’
Some people criticized Cannibal Corpse’s lyrics, while others defended the band by pointing out how death metal is different from MSI. “This mf and anyone who listens to him should be shot dead execution style i do not want to share the society with mentally ill freaks,” one person said.
Another one defended Corpsegrinder, writing, “Gen Z discovering Cannibal Corpse and trying to cancel them is hilarious. Meanwhile, Corpsegrinder is out here playing claw machine games and donating the stuffed animals to kids in need.” They also shared some photos of Corpsegrinder playing claw machines and giving the toys to children who need them.
“Gen Z scene kids trying to cancel Cannibal Corpse for lyrics written before they were born is the reason why metal is dying as a culture,” another individual on X noted.
In the days that followed, Cannibal Corpse fans defended the band after Gen Z criticized their lyrics. This sparked a lot of comments on social media. Young listeners showed their support. Some fans expressed their love for Cannibal Corpse and their albums. They think the criticism won’t hurt the band and could even attract new fans. Some people said they would cancel their Spotify subscriptions because the platform removed some Cannibal Corpse albums.
