Griffin Taylor, son of Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor, shared a thoughtful message supporting the transgender community on Instagram.
Taylor addressed mental health challenges within the trans community. He offered words of encouragement and support in his extensive message.
“I truly hope these words are helpful to anyone who needs to hear them. Regardless of gender, sexuality, race, or personal experience,” Taylor said. “I care about the community and the people who struggle and feel as though they have no choice for themselves, and for those who feel as though they’re too far away from the version of themselves that they envision.”
“So I wanted to make a bit of a therapeutic statement, give some encouraging words, and leave you all with a sense of validation,” he added. “I would like it to be know, that the inspiration for this passionate post was the realization that people, specifically in the trans community, tend to struggle with mental health issues, and from that, there is tragedy either from death or loss of moral compass.”
Taylor shared his perspective on the ongoing discourse about mental health challenges in the trans community.
“Both sides point the finger at the finger at the other and claim they are responsible for said tragedy,” he explained. “One side stating that ‘it’s because being trans is a mental illness’ while the other side state that ‘it’s because they are brought up in an environment where they are not accepted.’ And I agreed with the second statement more than the other because… well… I’m not an asshole who thinks that if people aren’t the same as me, they must be wrong.”
“But I felt the need to expand on that theory and really deep dive in to a somewhat ‘bandage’ that could help the community AND invite others who may struggle with the same themes yet different scenarios. … Just because these people feel differently about themselves than you do and want to make a difference for the better, doesn’t make them and less of a person than you or I,” Taylor shared.
Taylor elaborated on his theory about mental health challenges within the community.
“To make a long story short: had a theory that the reason why trans people in the community are struggling with mental health issues not only because of the public ridicule and ignorance but also because they couldn’t transition fast enough due to the process of transition itself or because they were young and couldn’t legally transition,” he continued.
He offered final advice for those facing similar challenges: “Please take your mental health into consideration and take care of yourself BEFORE making life altering decisions for yourself, and learn coping mechanisms to practice as a way to balance the harshness of the day to day problems and issues.”
