During a recent appearance on the Rockman Power Hour, the Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor responded to Duff McKagan’s comment, calling him a ‘young Bruce Springsteen.’
The host initially reminded the singer of McKagan’s words about him, saying:
“There’s a quote from Duff McKagan, not a quote but just a comment. ‘I saw Corey command an audience like a young Bruce Springsteen, acoustic guitar around his neck and truth-telling through songs as his means of communication. It was truly inspiring.’ When you read that when that was submitted for this letter that’s included with the record, how’d you feel? Were you a little like verklempt?”
Taylor responded by explaining his reaction:
“Are you kidding me? I mean, there aren’t a lot of people in this business that I have more respect for than Duff McKagan. Not only is he one of my good friends, but he’s someone who has not only seen it all but has been through hell and come back to live to tell about it.”
He continued:
“When you grow up watching somebody going, ‘F*ck, he’s one of the coolest dudes in the world,’ and then all of a sudden his number’s in your phone. I mean, it does things to your brain. So when he wrote it, that meant so much to me because, I mean, I have not always been the easiest person to like in this business.
Let’s put it that way because I’m very free with my opinion. Putting actually, I tend not to hold back. I’m not a d*ck, but I’m not kissing anybody’s a** man. I don’t have to.”
The rocker reflected more on his approach to music, adding:
“At this point, when it comes to music, I take it very seriously, and if something feels half-a**ed or below average, I’m gonna f*cking say something. So when I have somebody like that saying what he does, I try not to let the ego balloon get a little too big. I try to pop it with as many needles as I can, but at the same time, that’s a huge thing to live up to.”
