A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help Connie Burton — the older sister of late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton — cover the costs of an urgent, life-saving surgery. The campaign, organized by Maricela Dena, has raised approximately $4,400 so far toward its $15,000 goal.

The campaign page details the severity of Connie’s medical condition and the circumstances surrounding her need for financial support.

“Connie Burton is a dear friend and the only sister of Cliff Burton from Metallica,” the GoFundMe announcement read. “She has always been a light in the music world, sharing her story and faith with many. Recently, Connie has faced a life-threatening medical crisis: severe decay in her skull that started from her teeth and has now reached her sinuses. Doctors have warned that if the decay breaks through, it could be fatal. The surgery she needs is urgent, and she must put down a significant amount apart from what insurance will cover.”

The announcement also touched on Connie’s personal background and the challenges she has faced throughout her life.

“Connie’s journey has been filled with both challenges and miracles,” it continued. “Despite her circumstances — including being written out of her family’s will — she remains a born-again Christian, devoted to sharing hope and love with others. Her faith has carried her through many trials, and she continues to inspire those around her.”

The campaign concluded with a direct appeal to the public for support.

“We are reaching out to help Connie receive the surgery she needs to survive,” the announcement stated. “The funds raised will go directly toward her medical care, giving her a chance to heal and continue her work here on earth. Thank you again for supporting Connie. She is truly grateful for every act of kindness and believes that, with your help, another miracle is possible.”

The campaign has drawn attention from the wider rock and metal community, in part because of the enduring legacy of Cliff Burton himself — a figure whose influence on heavy metal remains deeply felt decades after his passing.

Cliff Burton served as Metallica’s original bassist from 1982 until his death in a tour bus accident in Sweden on September 27, 1986. He introduced complex bass lines, classical music influences, and a melodic sensibility that elevated Metallica’s compositions well beyond conventional hard rock. His contributions to albums such as Kill ‘Em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets helped define the band’s creative identity and cemented his status as one of the most innovative bassists in metal history.

Connie Burton has maintained a connection to her late brother’s legacy over the years. In 2018, she co-produced and narrated a documentary about Cliff’s life and career with Metallica titled The Salvation Kingdom, keeping his story alive for both longtime fans and newer generations discovering his music.

The medical condition described in the campaign — severe skull decay originating from dental infection — is consistent with a rare but documented complication known as odontogenic sinusitis with osteomyelitis of the skull. When dental decay progresses without treatment, bacteria can invade the maxillary bone and spread into the sinus cavities, causing a bone infection that may lead to life-threatening complications. In extreme cases, the infection can result in bacterial meningitis, brain abscess, or cavernous sinus thrombosis. Surgical intervention typically involves the removal of infected bone tissue, sinus drainage, and an extended course of antibiotic therapy.

The campaign has drawn 45 donors since its launch. Funds will go directly toward the cost of Connie’s procedure and recovery. The page has received coverage across several rock and metal media outlets, reflecting the community’s awareness of the situation and the ongoing need to reach the $15,000 goal.
