During a recent interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, Chris Robinson reflected on the harsh Black Crowes concert that resulted in fan chaos.
When asked what memories he has about their 1993 Houston concert, the singer replied:
“I mean, number one, the top hat that I’m wearing at the beginning of the show was stolen at the party after that. If I ever find the person who did it…. I’m still upset about that! It’s one of the only things that was ever swiped. That concert was important because there had been a mishap in Houston before.”
Details Of Mishap In Houston

Revealing the details of the Houston concert, he continued:
“An accident and the f*cking PA fell on some of our fans, which was brutal. So part of it was like, we wanted to come to Houston and do something to get a better vibe, than leaving it with people getting smashed by the f*cking speakers that fell because of the PA company or whatever. In that era, we were doing a lot of free concerts and all sorts of stuff outside of just the regular touring cycle.”
Announcement Of An Expanded Box Set

In other news from the band, over 30 years later from their debut album, an expanded box set is coming out on December 15. This set includes not just the regular songs but also rare tracks, live recordings from a famous 1993 show in Houston, and other special stuff that gives us a closer look at that time.
Robinson looked back on the band’s previous albums in the interview and recalled the aftermath of their debut record, ‘Shake Your Money Maker,’ noting:
“I think that world that we were in, I think we were very pleased with the first record. I think what we didn’t have in terms of our musicianship, we made up for in the compositions. But I think it was so lightning fast. We were already playing some of those songs.”
The vocalist added, further reflecting on the period they were preparing to work on the album ‘Southern Harmony’:
“We would work on riffs and songs [while we were on the road]. But then we came back to Atlanta, and we moved into my garage. I had a house for a little bit, and we just wrote all of those songs and went into the studio, and it was so fast. You know, I think that was the nature of keeping the whole thing rolling at the time.”
The band previously released a fresh remix of an unreleased recording of the Memphis soul classic ’99 Pounds,’ originally performed by Ann Peebles and penned by Don Bryant. This song is among the 14 previously unheard recordings featured on their upcoming box set.
