In a recent interview with iHeartRadio, Queen + Adam Lambert took a trip down memory lane as they reminisced about the band’s early days. During the interview, the band members shared their thoughts and experiences while examining old memorabilia, including a newspaper article from their pre-John Deacon era. The conversation brought to light some fascinating insights about Queen’s journey and the legendary musicians who formed the band.
Before John Deacon joined Queen as their bass player, the band went through a transition and growth period. In those early days, the band was called Smile, featuring Brian May, Roger Taylor, and Tim Staffell (later Freddie Mercury), with Mike Grose as their bass player. The trio and Mike Grose embarked on a fantastic tour of Cornwall in addition to other performances, which helped solidify their chemistry and pave the way for their eventual transformation into Queen.
During the interview, Brian May shared some information that revealed intriguing details about those pre-Queen days. He spoke about an old newspaper article, which featured a picture of Freddie Mercury and took him back to a time before the band was complete. While telling his memory, the musician fondly recalled their time as Smile and the experiences that led them to become Queen.
His words read:
“This looks like a friend of ours, Freddie, in his very, very early days. It’s before Queen was really intact. We had Mike Grose as a bass player in those days, as before we found John Deacon, and here are some little clips from local newspapers, saying when you can see us, and of course, we weren’t called Queen. Actually, this is just before that, is it? This is Smile. We did an amazing tour of Cornwall with the legendary drummer of Cornwall. There’s this man here. We were called Smile. Then, later on, with John, we were called Queen.”
Brian May’s reminiscing about Queen’s early days before John Deacon joined the band offered a rare glimpse into the formation of one of the most iconic rock bands in history. From the modest beginnings of Smile to the eventual formation of Queen, the journey of these legendary musicians is a testament to their dedication, passion, and the magic that happens when the right people come together. As the band continues to create music and share their experiences with fans worldwide, the memories of their early days remind them how far they’ve come and the enduring impact they’ve had on the world of music.
