Brian ‘Head’ Welch, guitarist for the metal band Korn, recently opened up about his spiritual journey and return to the band. He shared his story at the SoulStock Festival in a video posted by a fan on YouTube.

Welch reflected on his decision to leave Korn years ago due to his newfound Christian faith, despite significant financial opportunities.

“I ended up leaving the band for a while and I laid it down, as they say. You lay at the altar, you surrender your life. And the disciples left everything to follow Christ. And so I left my band,” Welch said. “I told them, ‘I don’t wanna do this anymore.’ We had a $25-million contract with another record label on the table. They were negotiating. And I was so encouraged and just joyful about Jesus, I didn’t care.”

The guitarist described how he publicly announced his departure and faith conversion, which drew significant media attention.

“I went on a radio station and told everybody, ‘Come to this church. I’m gonna tell you why I’m leaving my band.’ And my band’s, like, ‘Is this a practical joke? Are we getting punked?’ … They didn’t understand. They thought it was a joke,” he continued. “And next thing you know, MTV, CNN, Fox News, all these stations, go to this church to find out what happened to the dark metal guy. And I got up there and confessed in front of my family for the first time and the world that I had been a crystal methamphetamine user for all those years. And I teared up, and it was hard, honestly.”

Welch emphasized the lasting impact of his spiritual experience and his eventual return to the band.

“I knew at that moment that I had found something that was gonna be the rest of my life. People were saying it was a phase, but I was, like, ‘I don’t care what they say. They don’t understand what I just experienced. I found the meaning of life. I found the meaning of my life,'” he said. “And I didn’t know, ’cause I started going back to KORN. The Lord led me back there. And it’s messy and some people don’t understand it, but I know that I know that I know, through people that I trusted that counseled me through it, and just seeing the things that have been happening, what God has done, I know that I’m supposed to be there. And it’s been a crazy journey.”

Welch’s appearance at SoulStock reflects his ongoing commitment to sharing his faith journey with audiences who understand his spiritual transformation. The festival has become a significant platform for Christian artists and those who have found faith later in their careers.

TicketsCandy reported that Welch participated in an exclusive VIP Meet & Greet event at SoulStock 2025. This offered fans a rare opportunity to engage with him in a personal setting. This event symbolizes how his musical and spiritual paths continue to intertwine. It allows him to connect directly with those who have followed his journey.

The River 98.9 noted that the SoulStock Festival featured Welch alongside other Christian artists like Ben Fuller during its 6th annual event held from August 1st through 3rd in St. Marys. The festival has grown to become a significant gathering for Christian music enthusiasts and those seeking spiritual connection through music.

Welch’s story represents one of the most dramatic faith conversions in the metal music world. His decision to leave Korn at the height of their commercial success, only to return years later with his faith intact, demonstrates the complex relationship between personal beliefs and professional obligations in the entertainment industry.

The guitarist’s journey continues to inspire both Christian and secular audiences. It proves that spiritual transformation can coexist with heavy metal music. His presence at events like SoulStock reinforces his commitment to using his platform to share his faith while maintaining his role in one of metal’s most influential bands.
