Following former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds’ tragic death in a motorcycle accident, details of the accident were revealed in a police report released by the Atlanta Police Department.
The police report and 911 calls provide detailed accounts of the tragic motorcycle accident that claimed Hinds’ life.
“At the moment I arrived on scene [Hinds] was breathing and moving with visible injuries to his head, arms, and torso,” the reporting police officer wrote. “He was transported … to Grady [Memorial Hospital] where he perished from his injuries.”
A witness who called 911 described the immediate aftermath of the crash.
“[Hinds going] up in the air [immediately following the impact and spinning] a couple of times,” a 911 caller said. “And then he fell. It looks like his left leg buckled over his right leg. I was two cars back, so I didn’t get to see the full impact, but I heard the impact and [saw Hinds] spinning.”
The fatal motorcycle accident occurred on the night of August 20, 2025. This provides additional context to the tragic circumstances surrounding the former Mastodon guitarist’s death.
Fox5 Atlanta reported that the crash took place at the intersection of Memorial Drive SE and Boulevard SE, approximately two miles outside downtown Atlanta. Hinds was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he was struck by a BMW SUV that was making a left turn and allegedly failed to yield to his right of way.
The SUV driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. She told police she was “positive the light was green” when she made the turn. However, Blabbermouth noted that two witnesses disputed this account. They claimed the traffic light was red and stated that Hinds was driving fast at the time of the collision.
The impact of the crash was severe. Witnesses described how Hinds was thrown into the air and spun multiple times before falling to the ground. Metal Injection confirmed that first responders found Hinds breathing and moving but unresponsive, with fatal injuries to his head, arms, and torso.
The Atlanta Police Department has made the official police report and 911 call recordings publicly available. This provides transparency in the ongoing investigation. The case highlights the ongoing challenges of motorcycle safety at busy urban intersections, particularly during nighttime hours when visibility can be compromised.
