Brann Dailor has publicly responded to recent harsh criticism from former Mastodon bandmate Brent Hinds regarding the band’s live performance quality. This response comes from a report by Creamale.

Dailor’s response came in the form of an Instagram story post. He appeared to directly address Hinds’ previous comments about the band’s vocal performances being “out of key.”

“Sounds in key to me,” Dailor wrote in the caption of his post.

This brief but pointed response follows Hinds’ recent public statements criticizing his former bandmates’ musical abilities and personal character.

Hinds had previously made several inflammatory comments about the band, stating: “My Guitar sounds great, but Troy and Prawn sound absolutely horrible. They are way out of key. It’s embarrassing and they kicked me out of the band for embarrassing them for being who I am, but what about who they are?”

He continued his criticism by targeting the band’s vocal capabilities and studio work.

“They are two people that can’t sing together live or anywhere else in the world,” Hinds said. “Everything they try to sing in the studio is manipulated by autotune because they’re incapable of singing in key. F*ck these guys.”

Hinds also made personal attacks against his former bandmates’ character and behavior.

“Only I know who they really are. They are the biggest fans of themselves,” he stated. “I’ve never seen anyone in my life look in the mirror more than Troy Sanders. He thinks he’s God’s gift to anything. I’ve never met three people that were so full of themselves. It’s disgusting.”

Dailor’s Instagram story response marks the first public reaction from current Mastodon members to Hinds’ recent departure and subsequent criticism of the band.

The public feud between Hinds and his former bandmates represents a dramatic turn for one of metal’s most respected acts. It highlights the personal tensions that led to the guitarist’s exit from the group.

Guitar World reported that Hinds’ departure from Mastodon was initially announced in March 2025 as a “mutual decision.” However, his ongoing social media posts reveal the split was far more contentious than originally presented. The guitarist has explicitly claimed that the band members “kicked me out for embarrassing them for being who I am” and described the group as “horrible humans” in earlier statements.

The breakdown marks the end of an era for Mastodon. Blabbermouth noted that the band had maintained the same lineup, including Hinds, for 25 years before his departure. During this time, the Atlanta-based progressive metal group has produced eight studio albums since their formation in 2002. They established themselves as one of the genre’s most innovative acts.

The tension between Hinds and his former bandmates appears to stem not only from musical disagreements but from longstanding personal conflicts. Loudwire documented that Hinds has repeatedly alleged that the band’s live and studio vocal performances rely heavily on autotune due to what he perceives as a lack of vocal skill among his former colleagues.

Despite these serious accusations about their musical integrity and personal character, Mastodon continues to stand by their collective professionalism and musicianship. This stance is reflected in Dailor’s succinct but pointed rebuttal to Hinds’ criticism.
