Dream Theater Is In The Studio Recording Their 16th Album
Good news for progressive metal fans — Dream Theater is recording their next album.
Dream Theater, who last released a new album back in 2021, is back in the studio. The progressive metal giants have shared a photo on their official Instagram account from the studio with the caption that indicates the band started to record the next album. The band wrote:
“DT16 is officially underway!”
The First Album With Mike Portnoy In 15 Years
The upcoming record will mark the band’s first LP since the return of co-founding drummer Mike Portnoy last October.
Portnoy, along with John Petrucci and John Myung, co-founded Dream Theater in 1985. Over a span of 20 years, from the album ‘When Dream And Day Unite’ in 1989 to ‘Black Clouds & Silver Linings’ in 2009, Mike contributed to 10 Dream Theater albums before departing from the band in 2010.
Five years prior to rejoining the band, the drummer said in an interview that he ‘would not have put money’ on ever rejoining Dream Theater, the band he co-founded almost 40 years ago. Today, the rocker is in the works to create a new album.
Petrucci Is Excited To Have Portnoy Back
Just last month, Petrucci shared with GuitarWorld that he and his fellow bandmates were enthusiastic about creating new music.
Expressing his excitement about Portnoy’s return to the band, Petrucci stated:
“It’s really exciting to have [Portnoy] back in the band. We started the band together. I talked [earlier in the interview] about being 18 at Berklee [College Of Music]; that’s where we met. And we’ve been friends ever since. So, having him back in the band is really special to all of us. I know he’s really excited as well.
While they had not started the process of working on new music back then, the guitarist mentioned:
“We haven’t started [working on new music]. We haven’t written a note yet, but I’m sure when we get together, it’s just gonna be like old times. So, I’m really looking forward to doing that and diving in.”
Will They Play The Mike Mangini Stuff Live?
With the return of the original drummer, Mike Mangini was automatically dismissed.
Mangini, who played with the band from 2010 to 2023, has contributed to six studio and two live Dream Theater albums in total. Well, will the band be playing his stuff live? A fan asked the same question during a Q&A session, to which Portnoy replied with:
“It’s too soon to tell. When I left the band 13 years ago, I was the one writing the setlist and things like that. So, we haven’t even discussed what the new dynamic is gonna be.”
