Chris Stein, the guitarist and co-founder of the iconic band Blondie, recently shared a statement following arrests made in connection to his daughter’s death. The statement was posted on Instagram.
The statement came after law enforcement officials announced arrests in the case involving Stein’s daughter, Akira, whose death was drug-related. Stein expressed gratitude for the efforts of federal and local authorities in pursuing justice.
“Arrests have been made and announced today in Akira’s case,” Stein said. “The DEA, US Attorney folks from the NYC Southern District and NYPD have been very sympathetic and respectful all through this process and I can’t thank them enough for this hope of some justice for her. Please be careful.”
The case also involved Robert De Niro’s grandson, highlighting the tragic impact of drug-related incidents on prominent families. Stein’s statement underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address the circumstances surrounding these deaths.
Five men were arrested and charged in late October 2025 for their involvement in distributing fentanyl-laced drugs. These arrests led to the fatal overdoses of three 19-year-olds, including Akira Stein and Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez, the grandson of Robert De Niro, along with a third unnamed victim. The arrests represent a significant breakthrough following a two-year investigation into the drug-related deaths that originally occurred in 2023, according to AOL.
The five individuals charged are Bruce Epperson (a.k.a. “Tea”), Eddie Barreto, Grant McIver (a.k.a. “Dizzy”), John Nicolas (a.k.a. “John John”), and Roy Nicolas. They are accused of participating in a conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and other drugs, leading directly to the accidental overdose deaths of the three young people. The cases involved pills that had been laced with fentanyl, which were reportedly sold in downtown Manhattan, per AOL.
The collaborative investigation was led by the DEA, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, and the NYPD. These agencies’ coordinated efforts highlight ongoing work to combat the distribution of deadly synthetic opioids, particularly fentanyl, which has been responsible for a surge in overdose deaths in recent years. The law enforcement response underscores the severity with which authorities are addressing the issue of fentanyl-laced drugs in New York City, as reported by AOL.
Robert De Niro previously spoke about the loss of his grandson in a 2024 interview. He reflected on the tragedy and the personal impact of drug-related deaths in families. Both Stein and De Niro have used their platforms to raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl contamination in recreational drugs. They have emphasized the need for public caution and vigilance in the face of the ongoing opioid crisis.
