The ‘Don’t Say No’ singer Billy Squier has returned to music after 25 years of radio silence with a new single called ‘Harder On A Woman,’ which is nothing short of a controversial move as he shared that it was written in support for American women and their right to abortion.

Last year when after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and took away the woman’s right to abortion, the singer felt the intrinsic desire to release a song to show support to women who were let down by the outcome.

In fact, Squier already had some lyrics jotted down from writing sessions with C.C. Adcock a decade ago in 2012. When Billy heard the lyrics ‘Harder on a woman than it is on a man’ all those years ago, it stayed with him, and after the overturn, he knew it was time to finish the track and release it as a single.

Although it was a very controversial topic and still is, Billy is no stranger to backlash from the media considering his Kenny Ortega-directed ‘Rock Me Tonite’ music video resulted in his blooming career losing mainstream success in a split second.

The music video, in which he wore a pink tank top over a white shirt, made his fans question his masculinity. The feminine look in the video alienated a significant portion of his fans and caused his career to be irreversibly shattered. Although Billy and Kenny blamed each other for the downfall, the singer didn’t do anything to hold on to the career he worked to build.

This release, and a polemic one at that, might be the end of his 25-year break and put him on the map once again, but one does wonder, after not releasing any new music for that long why he chose to come out with a political stance rather than working on something more off the radar? What do you think about Billy’s latest single, ‘Harder On A Woman’?
