Billy Sheehan recently shared his opinions on Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal and explained why he might be the best guitar player out there. His statement was featured on Guitar Player.
The bass legend offered high praise for Bumblefoot’s musical abilities and character. He highlighted his unique playing style and technical prowess.
“Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal, what a genius player,” Sheehan said. “I don’t know when I met him initially — I think in L.A. at some of the jams he was around — but I’ve known him for years and years and years.”
Sheehan went on to elaborate on Bumblefoot’s exceptional skills and distinctive sound.
“He is a supremely capable and competent musician,” he continued. “That fretless double-neck — he kills on that thing. It’s very unique; it sounds very much like a slide guitar, the way he phrases some of his passages on that. It’s just brilliant.”
The bassist then made his boldest statement about Bumblefoot’s standing among guitarists.
“I don’t know if there’s a better player out there, and he’s another wonderful, sweet, giving, honest, righteous human being, which is very important,” Sheehan said. “He knows all the Talas songs, which I think is pretty cool. I took that as a great compliment that he knew about Talas and could play the songs.”
Sheehan’s praise comes at a time when Bumblefoot continues to showcase his innovative guitar techniques and collaborative spirit in the music industry.
Deko Entertainment reported that Thal released his 2024 instrumental solo album “Bumblefoot …Returns!” featuring high-profile collaborations with guitarists Brian May, Steve Vai, and Guthrie Govan, among others. The album highlights his innovative techniques including his signature fretless guitar that Sheehan specifically praised in his comments.
The album represents a return to Thal’s instrumental roots from 30 years prior. It spans metal, orchestral, and blues styles. YouTube interviews revealed that tracks like “Simon in Space” showcase fretless double-neck elements inspired by heavy riffs and personal themes. This demonstrates the very techniques that earned Sheehan’s admiration.
Thal’s career trajectory includes a significant eight-year tenure as Guns N’ Roses guitarist from 2006 to 2014. He has recently reflected on this period in interviews. Recent video releases showed he has discussed his integration into the band and his ongoing solo evolution post-departure. This shows how his unique fretless guitar approach has remained a constant throughout his diverse musical journey.
The mutual respect between Sheehan and Bumblefoot extends beyond just musical appreciation. This is evidenced by Thal’s knowledge of Sheehan’s band Talas. This connection highlights the deep musical relationships that exist within the guitar community, where technical mastery and personal character are equally valued by fellow musicians.
