When it comes to rock stars, the popular myth goes that with their excessive fame and fortune, they might get access to anything… or, in this case, almost anything. The former Sepultura frontman Max Cavalera recently recalled how he, Matt Sorum, and Billy Idol weren’t let into a party in Rio during a chat with Appetite for Distortion.
So, the rockers were in Cavalera’s home country, Brazil, for the festival Rock in Rio, and as your most usual rockers often do, they wanted to party. Then, the group of these rock icons went to a club to have fun at a party that was thrown for the festival, but while waiting to enter the club, things didn’t go the way they had planned.
“So, he [Matt Sorum] was hanging out,” said Max, recalling that night. “There was a party that we all went [to] for Rock in Rio, and this is gonna sound super absurd, but it did happen. We couldn’t get in on the party, but we were on the line to enter the club, and they closed the club.”
However, the people waiting to get into the club weren’t your usual partiers. There it was, Max Cavalera, a national treasure for Brazil, former GN’R drummer Sorum, and none other than Billy Idol. The singer remembered, “And behind, so, it was me and my wife, Matt Sorum was right next to me, behind me was Billy Idol, and none of us were getting, not even the motherf*ckers that were coming in.”
The host then asked if they really didn’t even let Billy Idol in. Cavalera said, “Not even Billy Idol, man. Everybody was like, the bouncer was like, ‘It’s close, everybody get the f*ck home,’ you know? It’s like… he [Sorum] was like, ‘What, are you serious? This is insane, man.’ But yeah, that was a fun memory of the night that [in] Rock in Rio.”
Being a famous rock star didn’t help Max, Sorum, or Idol when they came across a determined bouncer who wouldn’t let anyone enter the club. It was a bit surprising for Max that Billy couldn’t walk into the party. Yet, considering how much Cavalera is respected in Brazil, it’s also surprising that he and his wife weren’t let in either.
