Billie Joe Armstrong recently sat down with Guitar World in a chat and spoke about Green Day’s uncertain times and their decision to continue as a band.

Green Day transformed into one of the biggest rock bands by the end of the 1990s. They were on top of the world with hits like ‘Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)’ and albums like ‘Dookie.’ However, the transition into the 2000s was challenging. Their album ‘Warning’ didn’t hit as expected because of fan response and early leaks on Napster.

Personal tensions within the band were also high, and there was talk of possibly disbanding. When their demo tapes were stolen, they were working on a new album, ‘Cigarettes and Valentines. Armstrong talked about this period:

“We didn’t know what we really wanted to do. We’d been around for, like, a decade and a half, and we were just indecisive.”

They considered ending Green Day, but advice from their producer, Rob Cavallo, encouraged them to try something new. Green Day chose to push their boundaries with their next projects. They produced albums like ‘American Idiot.’

The Band Will Honor ‘Dookie’ And ‘American Idiot’ Anniversaries

Billie also shared plans for their upcoming ‘Saviors’ tour in 2024. It will celebrate the anniversaries of ‘Dookie’ and ‘American Idiot.’ He stated:

“But we definitely plan to celebrate those anniversaries for sure and play more off ‘Dookie’ and ‘American Idiot.’ And then at the same time, of course, do plenty of stuff from ‘Saviors’ and, you know, the other records.”

Armstrong is getting ready for Green Day’s ‘Saviors’ tour in 2024. The band has concerts planned in North America and Europe.
