Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher recently shared an emotional tribute about his relationship with former bandmate Brent Hinds. He opened up about their complex bond in a heartfelt statement posted on Instagram.

The tribute addressed their long history together and reflected on Hinds’ passing. Kelliher expressed the difficulty of processing his emotions during this time.

“It’s been hard to get a grip on my emotions this week,” Kelliher said. “We had our good and bad times just like in any relationship. All that we accomplished after that first fistfight in the van 25 years ago.”

Kelliher continued to reflect on their musical partnership and personal connection. He acknowledged both the challenges and the deep bond they shared.

“I didn’t think you’d be taken from us like this, absolute loss of a true one of a kind guitar wizard extraordinaire,” he continued. “Keeping up with you taught me a lot. You were a brother, we were a family, you were a wild man not to be tamed, you could f*ck up bowling ball with a feather.”

The guitarist concluded his tribute by celebrating Hinds’ unique character and lasting impact.

“You weren’t perfect but you were always DIRTY-B!!” Kelliher said. “Your vagabond/gypsy/wild child lives on through your music, I will miss your crazy ass Manimal.”

Kelliher’s heartfelt words reflect the deep musical partnership that helped define Mastodon’s sound over the years. The band now faces the challenge of moving forward without their longtime collaborator.

Guitar World reported that Kelliher has emphasized that finding a replacement for Hinds goes beyond technical skill. He stated that the new member must “stand the true test of time.” The guitarist stressed that living and touring closely with bandmates demands strong personal compatibility in addition to musical ability. This highlights the unique chemistry that made their partnership work despite its challenges.

The loss of Hinds marks the end of an era for Mastodon, particularly given his distinctive guitar work that helped shape the band’s progressive metal evolution. Guitar Player noted that Kelliher has recently reflected on their pivotal 2009 album Crack the Skye, which marked a new creative direction for the band. He recalled the recording studio in Atlanta where many of their defining moments took place. The location no longer exists but remains significant in their shared musical journey.

Kelliher’s tribute captures not only the personal loss but also the professional impact of losing a creative partner who helped define Mastodon’s sound. The reference to their “first fistfight in the van 25 years ago” speaks to the long history and complex dynamics that often characterize successful musical partnerships. Creative tension and personal bonds intertwine in these relationships.

The emotional weight of Kelliher’s words underscores how deeply intertwined personal relationships and musical creativity can become over decades of collaboration. His description of Hinds as a “wild man not to be tamed” and “vagabond/gypsy/wild child” paints a picture of an artist whose unconventional approach to both life and music left an indelible mark on those who worked closest with him.
