In a recent interview with Metal Hammer, Bad Omens frontman Noah Sebastian stirred controversy by criticizing metal fans for their views on musical genres and expressing frustration over their ignorance regarding metal subgenres.

The singer revealed that they might move away from their heavy metal sound. Sebastian finds it hard to picture himself playing heavy, core-based music in his late 30s, given his varied musical tastes. Addressing concerns raised by fans over potential musical changes, Noah said:

“Yeah, whenever you say sh*t like that in interviews – ‘We want to reinvent ourselves’ or ‘We want to totally change things’ – everyone just assumes that means you’re going to make a bubblegum pop record.”

Challenging Metalhead Perspectives

He then criticized the tendency within metal communities to dismiss anything remotely catchy or polished as pop, noting:

“I don’t know why people think that. I think it’s a metalhead thing because metalheads like to put a blanket over anything that isn’t metal. They just think anything that’s remotely catchy or polished is pop, and anything that’s electronic is EDM. As if there aren’t 20, 30 subgenres to those the same way metal has subgenres. I feel like metal fans forget that other genres have that, as well. But it’s coming out really cool, and it feels true to, without sounding too spiritual, the voice in my head and whatever it’s feeling right now.”

Cryptic Social Media Activity

Last month, Bad Omens joined the ranks of rock bands, deleting their social media accounts. They wiped all posts, including drummer Nick Folio and Sebastian. The band shared a video clip on their Instagram featuring Poppy, showing various images like a white rabbit and a butterfly. Bad Omens’ website only had a message saying:

“V.A.N. HAS TAK3N OVER ACCESS OF THIS SITE.”

Later, they performed their new single ‘V.A.N’ live for the first time on January 27 in Berlin, with the studio version’s music video released on January 24 via Sumerian Records.

In 2024, Bad Omens is set to have their most significant year yet. They’ll support Bring Me The Horizon on a European tour and perform at major festivals like Download, Hellfest, Rock am Ring, Welcome To Rockville, and Nova Rock.
