Avril Lavigne Explains The Impact Of ‘Sk8er Boi’ On Her Career
During a recent conversation with Uproxx, Avril Lavigne reflected on the importance of her iconic song named ‘Sk8er Boi’ in her music career. The singer expressed her gratitude for seeing new generations resonate with it 20 years after its release.
Avril Lavigne gained popularity at the young age of 16 when she signed a two-album recording contract with Arista Records. Her debut studio album entitled ‘Let Go’ gave birth to two successful singles named ‘Complicated’ and ‘Sk8er Boi,‘ which earned her the title ‘Pop Punk Queen.’ The latter track is one of the most significant turning points in Lavigne’s early career, as it helped the development of her image as the symbol of pop-punk and female-driven music in the early 2000s.
Following its release, ‘Sk8er Boi’ was well-received by numerous music critics. On top of praising reviews, the track received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in 2003. As for its commercial success, it reached the top 10 in more than ten countries, including the United Kingdom, The United States, Australia, and many more.
Thanks to the song’s fame and its storyline, a project about turning it into a movie started as early as 2003 when Paramount Pictures came up with the idea. The film was supposed to focus on the two teens from different backgrounds and the social constraints they find themselves in. However, the project was abandoned for five years due to several problems.
Fortunately for her fans who were excited about seeing the song come to life with a film, Lavigne announced last year that she would be making a movie about it for the song’s 20th anniversary. The singer did not share any additional details about the film except that the project will tell the story of a ballet dancer who falls in love with a rock star.
Avril Lavigne recently reflected on the song’s impact on her music career and the upcoming movie during a recent interview. The Canadian singer stated how much she loves hearing the song mentioned many years after it was first released. According to her, ‘Sk8er Boi’ is the song that resonates with people the most, and it is unbelievable that a brand new generation is listening to it.
In addition, Lavigne stated that the track would come alive in a different form after being turned into a movie, which is a process that’s currently happening. The musician revealed that she has a writer and a director at the moment, and she’s producing the movie and gathering a production team.
Lavigne’s statement about ‘Sk8er Boi’ follows:
“I love how much people still really bring that song up. I love how warmly everybody still feels toward it. It’s a really special thing and unique, to have a song that really stands out. I have a lot of big songs, but that one, everyone seems to resonate with. It’s taken on… it’s insane to see a whole new generation discovering the music of mine twenty years later. It’s pretty unbelievable. But the song is going to take a new life of its own as I turn it into a film; I’m in the process of doing that now. I have a writer and a director at the moment, and I’m producing it and assembling a team right now.”
