At The Gates bassist Jonas Björler recently opened up about the band’s eighth studio album and how vocalist Tomas Lindberg completed his final recordings before his death. He shared these insights in an interview with Kerrang.
Björler discussed how Lindberg managed to complete the crucial final recordings for their album “The Ghost of a Future Dead” between his cancer diagnosis and surgery.
“The only thing he hadn’t done was nailing the demo takes for the last three songs. And he did that between being diagnosed and having surgery,” Björler said. “In retrospect, that was a good idea, because then the album was safe.”
The bassist emphasized Lindberg’s dedication to his craft throughout the process.
“He was very meticulous, he wanted it to be right, but it was the same with everything we’ve done,” he continued. “He always put his whole heart into it.”
Björler also revealed the deeper meaning behind the album’s themes and title. The title took on additional significance after Lindberg’s diagnosis.
“He was trying to convey man’s loneliness in the vastness of space. Being a small intellectual creature in the whole mysterious universe is a really scary subject, so I think he wanted to explore that,” he explained. “The title, The Ghost Of A Future Dead, was something he came up with, that was the only thing that changed after being diagnosed and having the surgery. He was having so many weird drugs that he couldn’t sleep properly, he was having nightmares and visions, and I think it reflected what he felt at the time, so it’s a really fitting title.”
The bassist concluded by honoring his late bandmate’s vision for the album.
“He was fully aware and behind everything we’ve done,” Björler said. “We felt, for his sake and in his memory, it should be exactly as he wanted it to be. It’s his legacy.”
Lindberg’s battle with cancer was particularly challenging given the nature of his condition and its impact on his vocal abilities.
Loudwire reported that Lindberg’s cancer, adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), is a type that affects the mouth and palate. This made his vocal work particularly challenging given the surgical intervention required. The surgery removed a significant portion of the roof of his mouth. Yet he remained committed to completing the album’s vocal tracks despite these physical obstacles.
The Swedish vocalist’s dedication to his craft extended far beyond At The Gates throughout his career. Wikipedia noted that Lindberg was an active member of multiple death metal bands, including Lock Up and The Lurking Fear. This demonstrated his prolific contributions to the genre throughout his career. Known by the moniker “Goatspell,” he fronted many death metal bands and became a respected figure in the Swedish metal scene.
Lindberg’s diagnosis came to light publicly when he revealed in August 2025 that he had been battling cancer since 2023. Loudwire revealed that he had kept his condition private for nearly two years while continuing to work on music and maintain his various band commitments.
Tomas Lindberg passed away on September 16, 2025, at the age of 52, following his battle with adenoid cystic carcinoma. His final album with At The Gates stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment to his art. It was completed under extraordinary circumstances and serves as a fitting conclusion to his influential career in extreme metal.
