In many fans’ eyes, it’s the lead singer who’s often seen as the frontman of the band. Anthony Kiedis is the first name that comes to mind when thinking about the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but it seems like he doesn’t want to call himself the band’s frontman, as the singer disclosed during a recent conversation with 60 Minutes.
Anthony Kiedis was childhood friends with Flea, and the two had similar music tastes. Later, they met Hillel Slovak and Jack Irons and decided to form their own music band, which later became the Red Hot Chili Peppers. So, Kiedis has always been there from the formation period up until where they became one of the biggest rock bands in the scene.
Although RHCP underwent several line-up changes, they now continue as a quartet with Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith, and John Frusciante. Their fanbase probably thinks of Kiedis as the band’s frontman, but apparently, he doesn’t think the same. Speaking in a new interview, the vocalist revealed that RHCP has three frontmen.
Kiedis said he doesn’t call himself anything regarding his position in the band. He then described himself as a band member, musician, and songwriter. Following that, Kiedis admitted that RHCP has always had three frontmen, including Chad Smith, who he called ‘the frontman in the back.’
Asked what he called himself in the band, Anthony Kiedis said the following:
“I don’t call myself anything, really. I call myself a band member, a good-day musician, and a songwriter. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have three frontmen, and we always have. We have a frontman in the back: Mr. Chad Smith.”
So, Red Hot Chili Peppers handle things democratically rather than being under the leadership of one member. Apparently, that’s why Anthony Kiedis refuses to call himself the RHCP frontman and sees all of his bandmates in an equal position as the leaders of the iconic act.
