Andy Taylor On Not Being Able To Rejoin Duran Duran

Andy Taylor was forced to miss Duran Duran’s Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Induction. During the band’s acceptance speech, fans learned the sad truth: Andy was diagnosed with stage IV metastatic prostate cancer. Speaking to 5 News, the guitarist revealed how he felt about his bandmates reading his letter to reveal the cancer diagnosis while he wasn’t able to take part in the ceremony.

“I was due to rejoin Duran Duran,” Andy recalled. “We were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Los Angeles on November 5. I did a lot of preparation. I’ve got fabulous people and a great doc. I just didn’t have that [excitement], you know, and I was like, ‘Whoa’ because you lose all of your testosterone in treatment. I mean, just that in itself. I bet most men don’t have a clue.”

Reacting to his letter being read aloud by his bandmates, Taylor continued, “So, I had to miss the ceremony; quite a public event, and it was on HBO. It’s just funny how these things collide. So, I wrote a letter to the band explaining the situation, and they very graciously, and generously read that out before the ceremony. That’s when it went public, but I didn’t have any plan; it wasn’t something [prepared].”

He then urged their female fans to ask their boyfriends to get a test, saying, “Then afterward, the amount of love and support and offers of help, but I also realized that by talking about it, you know, Duran has quite a large female fan base, so it’s like your partner, your boyfriend — give him a nudge, go and get a test!”

In November 2022, Duran Duran informed fans about Andy Taylor’s health status by reading his letter during their acceptance speech. The letter revealed that the guitarist had been diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer four years ago. After the ceremony, the band didn’t forget to pay their friend a visit and bring him the award.
