Alex Van Halen recently discussed his search for a new singer for his upcoming album project. Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst expressed interest in the role, as reported on X (formerly Twitter).

Van Halen opened up about the challenges of finding the right vocalist for his new material, particularly regarding his initial choice for the project.

“We originally had plans to — I think I can probably say without talking outta school, one of the singers who we really, really, really wanted to use for the new stuff was Paul Rodgers, and he has a relationship with Luke and we grew up on Free and all that, but [Paul] can’t do it anymore,” Van Halen said in his interview with Kazagastão. “And it was very difficult for him to bring himself to say, ‘No, I can’t. Count me out.’ I respect that. I’m saddened and disappointed, but you know, that’s life.”

Van Halen continued to express his understanding of Rodgers’ decision.

“He knows he can’t do it — which I think is better than saying, ‘Yeah, I can do it,’ and then not be able to do it,” he added.

Following Van Halen’s interview, Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst quickly responded with enthusiasm about potentially filling the vocalist position.

“Let’s go!! I’m ready,” Durst commented on the social media platform.

The album project represents a significant development in Van Halen’s musical legacy. It involves completing unfinished work from the band’s archives.

Blabbermouth reported that the album features previously unreleased and unfinished Van Halen recordings that were originally intended to become the band’s next studio record. These tracks represent some of the final material that Eddie Van Halen worked on before his passing in 2020.

The collaboration involves Alex Van Halen working alongside Toto guitarist Steve Lukather, who serves as what Alex calls “the connective tissue” for the project. VHND noted that the recordings already include drums, guitar, and bass parts. Wolfgang Van Halen recorded bass on the tracks.

Ultimate Guitar confirmed that Alex Van Halen stated these recordings were intended to be the next Van Halen album. This makes the search for the right vocalist crucial to honoring Eddie’s musical vision.

The project marks a departure from considering previous Van Halen vocalists. Alex isn’t looking toward David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar, or Gary Cherone for this particular endeavor. Instead, the focus remains on finding a fresh voice that can complement the existing instrumental tracks while maintaining the integrity of the original compositions.
