Alex Lifeson Says He Doesn’t Really Care If Rush Fans Are Disappointed With New Envy Of None Album

Rush’s Alex Lifeson recently joined an interview with Heavy Consequence to discuss his new project, Envy of None. He stated that he loved their new record and didn’t care if Rush fans were disappointed with it.
Alex Lifeson formed Envy of None in 2021, along with bassist Andy Curran, vocalist Maiah Wynne, and guitarist Alfio Annibalini. The band immediately entered the studio to work on some new material. They initially planned to release an album in late 2021, but it was delayed to 2022 as they were not finished yet.
The band’s self-titled debut studio album finally dropped on April 8, 2022. They had released the first single from the album, ‘Liar,’ on January 12, 2022, and later on, the second one, ‘Look Inside,’ on March 2, 2022. The album includes 11 tracks and stands out with its wide range of sounds like rock, electronic, acoustic, and psychedelia. Hence, it is a departure from Rush’s traditional rock sound.
During a recent conversation, Lifeson was asked about this difference and whether Rush fans would enjoy the distinct musical style of Envy of None. The guitarist explained that he hopes they will like it, but he also doesn’t care much. If the fans expect something like Rush’s sound, they will likely get disappointed. Lifeson revealed that Rush will always have a special place in his life, but he also intends to do new things. Thus, people shouldn’t expect him to sound like Rush.
When asked about Rush fans’ reaction to their new album, Alex Lifeson replied:
“I don’t know. I hope so. If they’re expecting Rush or something along those lines, then they might be disappointed. But personally, I don’t really care. I love this record; I love what we created together. And listen, Rush was a part of my life. It will always be a part of my life. I’m proud of it. I’m proud of the legacy. But, it ended seven years ago, and I’m still alive and thinking about other things and looking at the horizon. So, if other people are expecting something like that from me, then that’s their problem, in a nice way, of course!”
