Five Finger Death Punch guitarist Zoltan Bathory recently shared his perspective on the most influential bands in heavy metal history. He placed Judas Priest in a position of high regard in a statement to Loudwire.
Bathory emphasized the foundational role these legendary bands played in creating the heavy metal genre.
“The genre heavy metal wouldn’t be without them,” Bathory said. “Black Sabbath, Ozzy and then very close to that, Judas Priest.”
The guitarist continued to elaborate on the significance of these pioneering acts in shaping modern heavy metal.
“These guys founded the genre we are in,” he continued. “They are the foundation. They are elders. They are the elders in our genre. You absolutely have to understand that and respect that. Without them, this genre wouldn’t have become, it wouldn’t exist.”
Bathory’s assessment reflects the widely recognized historical significance of both bands in establishing heavy metal as a distinct musical genre.
EBSCO Research Starters documented that Judas Priest was founded in Birmingham in 1969. The band is often credited as a pioneer of the new wave of British heavy metal, known for their distinct dual guitar attack and iconic leather-and-studs aesthetic. The band’s influence extends beyond their music. They have also shaped the visual identity of heavy metal that continues to define the genre today.
TeachRock noted that Rob Halford’s leadership and openness about his personal life have contributed to challenging norms within the music industry. This makes Judas Priest not only musically influential but also culturally significant. This pioneering approach helped establish heavy metal as a platform for artistic expression and personal authenticity.
Powster reported that Judas Priest’s impact on the genre is evident in their sales figures. The band has sold over 50 million records worldwide. This solidifies their status as one of the most influential bands in music history. Their commercial success demonstrates the lasting appeal of their foundational contributions to heavy metal.
Grunge highlighted that their landmark albums such as “British Steel” and “Screaming for Vengeance” have been pivotal in establishing heavy metal as a mainstream phenomenon. These albums proved that the genre could achieve both critical acclaim and commercial viability.
