Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello recently revealed the behind-the-scenes drama that led to Yungblud performing Black Sabbath’s “Changes” at the band’s farewell show. He shared details about last-minute changes in a statement to 98KUPD radio station.

Morello served as curator for Black Sabbath’s all-star Back To The Beginning farewell show. He explained how a difficult situation just 48 hours before the performance ultimately created one of the event’s highlights.

“One of the greatest moments of it was Yungblud singing [a cover of Black Sabbath’s] ‘Changes’. Well, 48 hours before, he wasn’t gonna be the singer of that song,” Morello said.

The guitarist described the challenging circumstances that led to the change.

“Things were changing… I landed at Heathrow Airport and I got a call, like, ‘That’s not happening.’ So I’m, like, ‘Okay, let’s figure it out.’ And it turned out to be one of the highlights. But that’s the gig. That’s what the gig is,” he continued.

Morello’s comments highlight the unpredictable nature of live music production and how last-minute adjustments can sometimes lead to unexpected success.

The last-minute casting change proved to be more than just a successful backup plan. Loudwire reported that Yungblud actively fought for the opportunity to perform the ballad, telling Morello directly: “Give me the ballad… Trust me, I’ll bring the house down.”

The performance took place at Villa Park in Birmingham, England. Yungblud delivered the emotional ballad to more than 40,000 people in attendance. Ultimate Classic Rock noted that the performance featured an impressive lineup of musicians spanning multiple generations, including Nuno Bettencourt, Frank Bello, and Adam Wakeman.

The gamble on Yungblud’s performance paid off in ways that exceeded all expectations. Ultimate Guitar revealed that the performance later won Best Rock Performance at the 2026 Grammy Awards, cementing its place as one of the most memorable moments from Black Sabbath’s farewell celebration.

Despite performing in front of such a massive crowd at such a significant event, Yungblud remained remarkably composed throughout the performance. The young artist’s confidence in his ability to deliver the emotional weight of “Changes” proved justified when the performance became both a critical and commercial success.

The success of this last-minute change demonstrates how spontaneous decisions in live music can sometimes create the most powerful and lasting moments. It turned what could have been a crisis into a career-defining performance for all involved.
