Wolfgang Van Halen recently praised Tool guitarist Adam Jones, declaring him one of metal’s greatest rhythm players in an interview with Guitar.com.
Van Halen shared his thoughts on Jones’ playing style and the profound impact Tool’s music had on his own musical development.
“The first song I heard from Tool was Third Eye [from 1996’s Ænima], which is funny, because it wasn’t a single or anything. It kind of opened my mind – opened my third eye, so to speak – regarding what music can be,” Wolfgang Van Halen said. “I was like, ‘This is a 13-minute song! Not just a four-minute thing!’ It blew my mind when I was in seventh grade.”
Van Halen went on to explain what makes Jones such an exceptional rhythm guitarist.
“There’s power in its simplicity: when Adam just holds down the rhythms and almost lets Justin [Chancellor, bass] take the lead, they have such a great connection,” he continued. “When it comes to rhythm playing, Adam is almost like the Malcolm Young of metal. He is such a fucking awesome rhythm guy, and he’s a great lead guy, too. Things like the talkbox solo on Jambi are just the best.”
The musician also revealed how Tool’s influence appears in his own band Mammoth’s music.
“In Mammoth, the influence of bands like Tool and Meshuggah will come out in places you don’t expect. If you listen to [the song] The End, the very end of it, there’s this double-kick, half-time, metal-ey thing. They just pop up… It’s never intentional,” Van Halen said.
Van Halen’s praise for Jones reflects the guitarist’s unique position in metal music. His background extends far beyond traditional musicianship.
Wikipedia reported that Jones was born January 15, 1965, in Park Ridge, Illinois. His professional journey began with an unexpected foundation in Hollywood special effects work. Before achieving fame with Tool, Jones worked on major films including Jurassic Park and Terminator 2. He developed skills in visual storytelling that would later influence his approach to music videos.
This unique background in special effects has shaped Tool’s visual identity significantly. Coffeehouse Guitars noted that Jones has directed the majority of Tool’s music videos, including iconic clips for “Sober” and “Schism.” He brings his cinematic expertise to the band’s visual presentation. His ability to blend complex rhythms with atmospheric soundscapes draws from early musical influences like Led Zeppelin and King Crimson.
Jones’ guitar work has earned widespread critical recognition within the metal community. Wikipedia documented that Rolling Stone ranked him as the 75th-greatest guitarist of all time. Guitar World placed him ninth in their Top 100 Metal Guitarists list. These accolades reflect his innovative approach to rhythm guitar playing that Van Halen specifically highlighted in his comments.
The guitarist’s influence extends beyond technical prowess to encompass a broader artistic vision. MN2S described how Tool’s unique sound blends alternative metal with progressive elements, creating a distinctive musical landscape that has inspired countless musicians like Van Halen. This artistic approach has helped establish Tool as one of the most influential bands in modern metal. Jones’ rhythm work serves as a foundational element of their sound.
