Wolfgang Van Halen recently opened up about his spiritual journey following the loss of his father, legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen. His reflections were shared on Louder Sound.
Van Halen reflected on how his faith was shaken by his father’s passing. The absence of the spiritual connection he once believed they shared deeply affected him.
“I was a spiritual person, but after I lost my dad, I became less so,” Van Halen said. “Our connection was so special, I would probably be able to feel him if he weren’t here anymore, and I don’t.”
The musician described the emotional toll of losing that anticipated spiritual bond. Grief can erode deeply held beliefs in profound ways.
“It’s comfortable to think things like that, but when the worst happens and you lose people close to you and you don’t feel that connection anymore, it’s easy to lose grip on those feelings,” he continued. “It leaves a black hole in you.”
Despite his diminished spirituality, Wolfgang has channeled his grief into meaningful ways of honoring his father’s memory. Rather than relying solely on faith, he has found tangible connections that keep Eddie’s presence close.
Wolfgang carries his father’s ashes with him at all times, wearing them in a necklace alongside a ring and heart necklace both bearing his father’s thumbprint. This detail emerged from Van Halen News Desk. This physical connection serves as a constant reminder of their bond, allowing him to maintain closeness despite the spiritual void he experiences.
During every concert performance, Wolfgang performs a gesture pointing to the sky. This ritual reflects his complex relationship with spirituality and loss. Van Halen News Desk documented his explanation: “I don’t know why I do it, honestly. I’m not a religious person. I think my dad and my relationship was so strong and the love was so strong that if there ever was a way to communicate to somebody who’s passed, we’d figure it out. And I haven’t felt anything.”
Eddie Van Halen’s death in October 2020 profoundly impacted Wolfgang’s worldview. Loudwire revealed that the loss continues to shape his perspective years later. Rather than abandoning his connection to his father, Wolfgang has channeled his grief and spiritual questions into his own music career with his band Mammoth. He uses his artistic work as a vehicle for processing loss and creating his own legacy independent of his father’s iconic status.
