An album could be viewed as a love letter or a tribute, especially when it aims to celebrate other acts. Well, at least this is what Willow Smith had in mind when she was creating her newest album, ‘Coping Mechanism.’ The singer discussed her love for rock as a genre and fascination with various rock bands, from the Smashing Pumpkins to Lamb of God, while speaking to Guitar World.

“I feel that rock is such an expansive genre,” the young musician said while explaining her approach to the matter. “People focus on pop-punk a lot. We all love pop-punk; it’s beautiful and amazing. But let’s not forget the metal, thrash, and classic rock. There are all these different forms that rock takes and all these different feelings it can express.”

Rock has various sounds, styles, and forms and Willow wanted to discover and admire the broad spectrum of rock by appreciating numerous acts with different sounds in her new album. She confessed, “This album is a love letter to all the flavors rock can have, from Smashing Pumpkins to Lamb of God.”

Smith explained that rock doesn’t have an established sound but several subgenres. The singer felt fascinated with every dimension of rock, and she wanted to declare her admiration for her favorite acts with a love letter. However, the only acts Willow admires aren’t the Smashing Pumpkins and Lamb of God. Check out how Willow Smith declared her love for System of a Down’s ‘Toxicity.’
