Why Roger Waters Was Called ‘Worst Musician In Pink Floyd’ By Steven Wilson

Steven Wilson is known for mainly being a solo musician who released six albums without a band. However, he is also the co-founder of Porcupine Tree which is a band that embraced the genre of psychedelic rock. He was also a member of several other bands, but he didn’t commit to them as much as he committed to Porcupine Tree.

He received a lot of accomplishments including a description of The Daily Telegraph in which they stated that he is a ‘resolutely independent artist’ and ‘probably the most successful British artist you’ve never heard of.’ The band was an inspiration that came to Wilson when he was only a little boy. The psychedelic rock genre and staying away from mainstream music are the two reflections of his inspiration for Pink Floyd.

How Is Pink Floyd An Inspiration For Steven Wilson?

When he was younger, his parents bought each other Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ and Donna Summer’s ‘Love to Love You Baby’ as Christmas gifts. Those two albums developed both his songwriting and guitar skills and eventually formed Porcupine Tree. He also adapted to keeping a low profile in terms of their appearance in media which is also an example from Pink Floyd.

Although Wilson admires Pink Floyd, he stated that Roger Waters is the worst musician in Pink Floyd in an interview with Louder Sound in 2017 while talking about Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth. His idea of a great musician is those who think musically instead of having musical abilities. His claim that Waters is the worst musician in Pink Floyd was groundbreaking.

Here is what he said about Mikael Åkerfeldt and Roger Waters:

“When Mikael says he’s a mediocre singer or guitarist, I understand what he’s saying – I say the same thing. But he’s a great musician – and that has got nothing to do with ability. Great musicians are people who are brilliant musical thinkers. Brian Eno is one – he can’t play anything, but he thinks about music in a brilliant way.

Roger Waters, arguably the worst musician in Pink Floyd, is another – he’s responsible for most of their groundbreaking music. Mikael is in the same category. I’d like to see Akerfeldt make a record that really focuses on his songwriting because he’s a fantastic songwriter.

I’ve just made a record where I’ve stripped away a lot of the more conceptual elements and focused on my songwriting. I’d like to see him do the same because I think he is really underrated as a melodicist, songwriter, and arranger. I think that would be a challenge for him but one he’d absolutely rise to.”

After the departure of Pink Floyd’s previous singer-songwriter Syd Barrett in 1968, Waters became the band’s songwriter and co-lead vocalist contributing to its success. Roger Waters was inducted to the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005.
