The music industry can be a grueling and chaotic space, with artists often facing career challenges and obstacles. For Isaac Brock, frontman of indie rock band Modest Mouse, a shocking encounter while recording their 2000 album ‘The Moon & Antarctica’ left a lasting impact.

As the creative force behind Modest Mouse, Isaac Brock has been known for pushing boundaries and experimenting with sound. However, as the band was recording their third album, an unexpected event changed the creative process. In an April 2004 interview with Josh Modell of AV Club, Brock recounted the harrowing incident he faced after a seemingly innocent interaction took a dark turn.

Isaac Brock’s experience of getting punched during a drunk night out shed a light on Modest Mouse’s reputation for over-indulgence in drugs and alcohol. As Brock revealed in the interview that he was a ‘friendly drunk guy’ who decided to say hello to a group of kids hanging around on the sidewalk outside his apartment while recording ‘The Moon & Antarctica.’ Unfortunately, before he could get any words out, one of the kids punched him in the face, breaking his jaw. This random attack by a group of 14 kids left Brock injured and forced the band to cut back on his vocals during the recording of the album.

In the same interview, Brock also discussed the band’s reputation for drug and alcohol abuse. He regretted his past actions, stating that he had only been able to write songs on pills, pot, and alcohol and that inhalants and meth had ‘totally f*cing screwed’ him out of some brain cells. Brock’s experience further highlighted the darker aspects of the music industry, including the pressures of fame and a fast-paced, intense lifestyle that often involves drug and alcohol abuse.

Isaac Brock’s recollection of the time he got his jaw broken in Chicago read:

“We were living in an apartment above Clava Studios, where we were recording ‘The Moon & Antarctica,’ and we’d been out at a bar. We drove back to the apartment, and there was a park kind of kitty corner to it, where local kids were just hanging out. I was going to smoke a cigarette outside before I went in, I’m a friendly drunk guy, and I decided to shoot the shit with these kids. I’m like, ‘Hi, how are you all doing?’ And before I can get more words out, some dude from the side just full-on punches me and breaks my jaw.”

He added:

“There are 14 of these f*ckers. They were chasing after our dog, throwing bottles at me, still throwing punches—but they never landed another one. That’s one of the things that could make me think that maybe I’m full of shit on this higher-power thing because there’s no reason they kept missing after that first punch. I remember turning around and saying, ‘You broke my jaw!’ and they’re just like, ‘F*ck you, cowboy!'”

Modest Mouse’s reputation for over-indulgence in drugs and alcohol has been well-documented, with several band members struggling with addiction and substance abuse. The band’s lyrics often touch on isolation, depression, and addiction, which may reflect their personal experiences. While they have certainly faced their fair share of challenges, including Brock’s violent attack, Modest Mouse remains a beloved and influential band in the alternative music scene, inspiring countless fans with their unique sound and emotionally resonant lyrics.

Despite the horrifying encounter, Brock and Modest Mouse persevered, continuing to create innovative music and inspiring countless fans. The band’s resilience in the face of adversity is a testament to their dedication to their art and ability to overcome obstacles. As artists like Brock continue to share their stories, they remind us of the human side of the music industry and the triumphs and challenges that come with it.
