Vince Gill Admits He Refused Adding His Songs To The Eagles’ Setlist
Vince Gill recently joined an interview with Cleveland.com and talked about his experiences of working with The Eagles. Gill recalled the time Don Henley asked if he would like to add some of his own songs to the setlist of The Eagles.
After the long-lasting member of The Eagles, Glenn Frey passed away in 2017, Glenn’s son Deacon Frey and Vince Gill were hired to take his place in the band. The Eagles have gone through a lot of lineup changes and dramatic relationships with the previous members of the band. However, they made it to 2022 and are still actively performing their iconic songs to their fans.
Vince Gill was already familiar with the band as Joe Walsh had inducted him into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. Being active in the music scene since 1978, the singer has an extended discography both solo and with his band Pure Prairie League. He also won 22 Grammy Awards and became the most Grammy-winning male country musician.
In a recent interview, the musician was asked if The Eagles harbored some original music in their setlist, and Gill replied by saying that he doesn’t think so. He indicated that the band doesn’t have an attempt at doing original songs and that Henley even asked him to perform some of his solo songs while on stage. However, Vince disagreed because he was shy from rejection from the fans.
Here is how he stated his refusal:
“I don’t think so. There doesn’t seem to be any kind of attempt at that, and I think that’s pretty healthy. Don was nice enough to say, ‘Hey, let’s do one of your songs’ and I said, ‘With all due respect, I’d rather not.‘ I’m already stepping into a place where a lot of people may not be that accepting of me. The last thing I want to do is give them one more reason to say, ‘I didn’t come here to hear his songs, too. I just came to hear Eagles songs!’ So, we’ve kind of kept it at that, which seems to make the most sense.”
He embraced and accepted that he will be a performer to The Eagles’ fans from now on and is not willing to take the stage his own. According to Gill, the audience is there for The Eagles and not for him and he is respecting that widely. The band didn’t release new music since 2007, and in 2020, their 2018 tour concerts were released, marking Gill’s debut release with the band.
